Lithe swashbuckler in the best silent tradition, but with a synchronized score (by William Axt) which made it a sensation and led directly to the talkie revolution.

SPOILERS Before I start praising this movie I want to say two things: -THAT LADY IN THE PROLOGUE KISS THE CHILD WTF -Don Juan tried to rape the girl and, you know, that’s a deal braker , I can’t root for the guy and I’m mad it ended with him succeeding. Now, apart from that, the costumes, the scenery, the cinematography, the action scenes and the acting was phenomenal; truly a Hollywood classic. The husband of the woman that killed herself was stellar, he nailed the crazy guy role. 69 'cause sex

A very entertaining silent flick from start to finish. Nothing spectacular or too original, just a decent pace, laidback atmosphere, good acting, interesting story and overall enjoyable.

The costumes are awesome and every once in a while it gets exciting, but timeless this is not and there are far better silent features to waste your time with--although I'm not entirely sure Barrymore had much better to offer.

Thrilling, swashbuckling action on balustrade and in boudoir, as Barrymore, still untouched by the ravages of drink, flourishes his rapiers. A silent, but has a sound-synchronized introduction.

Many exciting action sequences, including classic sword fights in which Barrymore eschewed a stunt double. Great attention is also paid to the detail of the costumes and settings of the Spanish-Moor period. Noted for employing fledgling movie sound effects and as the first film with a synchronized musical score from the Vitaphone Company, which, ironically, were responsible for eclipsing the movie's reputation. Watch for Loy as an Asian vamp and Oland as a pre-Charlie Chan Cesare Borgia.
