Santarô Marune is the director, but more interestingly it's Akira Kurosawa's writing. If Sugata Sanshirô (1943) was his tribute to judo, then Dohyo matsuri (1944) is his tribute to sumo. Solid drama, but for the most part doesn't have that emotional touch to take it to the next level. As with Sugata it's a lot more intense than the average Japanese movie at the time, which comes across perfectly with that final sumo bout, so it shows its qualities.
