The latest battle in the eternal war between Good and Evil has come to New Jersey in the late, late 20th Century. In Kevin Smith's comic fantasia Dogma, angels, demons, apostles and prophets (of a sort) walk among the cynics and innocents of America and duke it out for the fate of humankind. (Lions Gate Films)

Yet another film I liked more the second time. Had some great writing. The "shit demon" scene brings it down a bit and Fiorentino could of done better. However Rickman, Affleck and Damon were all great. Jay and Silent Bob were funny as usual. Some minor let downs but a great movie none-the-less.

A Comedy Central after-school jam. I only wish it stayed on target a little more instead of throwing to sex jokes every time it gets embarrassed of being thoughtful. Ben Affleck is weirdly good in this.

Kevin Smith attempts to make an educational, yet funny film about Catholicism and fails in both departments. The humour and the knowledge of religion are completely separated, meaning that scenes are either boring or unfunny. Smith is able to show in this film only a sense of the talented writer-director that he has proven in the Clerks films, but here it comes off as wonky and lazy; this can especially be noticed in the underwhelming fight/action sequences.

WARNING: You must be comfortable with your feelings on religion to be able to enjy this movie. That being said, this is my second favorite Kevin Smith film, right behind Clerks. Damon and Affleck are fantastic. Fiorentino's work is very good as the very confused Last Scion. My only real complaint with the movie is the prominance of Jay and Silent Bob (even though they are crucial to the plot). Even the casting of Alanis Morrisette is clever. Favorite Silent Bob line, "No tickets." - c

It's so clever that you really have to applaud it for it's brutal honesty about religion. You don't have to agree with the movie, because really that's all it is. It's just a religion movie with scatalogical humor.

Kevin Smith at his best. This controversial comedy is a brutally honest look at religion. It's got Smith's flare for pop culture, and his clever dialogue is snappy and hilarious. It's not a serious film, but you can still watch it and talk about it like it is. If you have a thing against making fun of a religion a little, well... don't see it, or quit being a baby and see it anyway. Really good!

Arguably Smith's most ambitious effort to date in the irreverent fun he is having with theological concepts and contradictions is a fascinating if overstuffed exercise; while he can't quite reconcile his penchant for freewheeling dialogue against the "seriousness" of his subject matter, the film still works as a cheerful piece of entertainment, with a game cast (highlighted by Affleck and Damon's double-act) bringing a life and energy whenever the philosophical digressions threaten to overwhelm.

Maybe not quite as great as I remember, but still an impressive achievement from Smith. Other than the occasionally slow pacing and having too much Jay and Silent Bob it's a film that meshes storytelling, dialogue and world crafting into varied and highly effective comedy. It's also a reminder that yes, Smith was a capable director at one point.

Going in expecting religious satire is a great mistake, one which is immediately revealed as the totally transparent attempt to pass juvenile humour by tacking it on to religion becomes apparent. Despite the interesting premise Dogma undermines itself at every turn, eventually leading it into a total cinematic limbo, only accompanied by the dull finale and a demon made of excrement. Ironically, the latter actually manages to briefly raise the tone of the movie. A completely trivial experience.

There are plenty of highs and interesting points in this film. For instance, is it morally permissible for a Christian to allow a brain dead person (living only by virtue of life support) to die if keeping him alive means the end all existence? There are a number of weak points too, but it's excellent overall. See it for the airport, Mooby, and "Catholicism, WOW!" scenes if nothing else.

Tell me all you want about this movie's rough edges. In my heart it will always remain a precise, cathartic, unrelenting middle finger to the titular idea within Christianity. As poignant as it is hilarious, as epic as it is intimate, as pro-god as it is anti-church, This is Kevin Smith's satire at its finest. Flawlessly casted and endlessly quotable, Dogma is a must-see for anyone who's felt chained to antiquated, arbitrary ideologies. In other words, everyone needs to see this movie.

I just found it annoying. The entire film is one continuous schtick about how some angels are half-assed cynical superbeings. They develop the entire idea in the first 10 minutes and from there the presentation just repeats itself. There is an underlying theme of karma that's morally gratifying but is delivered with such pretentiousness that it's difficult to fully appreciate.

Never quite know how to rate Kevin Smith films. Clearly, I take issue with his existential paradigm, but damn, he really writes a compelling human drama. I often feel his comedy trends overly sadistic, and his characters trend misogynistic, petty, venal & lowbrow, but as such, he captures certain people perfectly, in ways that make them more obviously absurd than disappointing. Dogma is a departure from his lowkey, taciturn style. More flamboyant & over the top than usual. I think I enjoyed it.

Believe it or not, there was a time when critics had expectations for Kevin Smith films, and he delivered his most ambitious film yet: an epic satire of contemporary American religiosity that pokes fun at fundamentalism from the perspective of a true believer with a dirty mind. Its mix of low brow humour and pseudo-philosophical dialogue is amusing at first, but it quickly gets old, and Smith lacks the technical skills necessary to lend the material a real sense of grandeur.

The laughs are hit and miss though and the same can be said for the cast. Rickman steals the show. Jay & Silent Bob are dumb but comical. Dogma should be Kevin's brightest film, but it might actually be his dumbest. Overstuffed with uninteresting characters and jokes that have aged really bad -- execept for Buddy Christ, which would be a great concept for the current revolution being held by the new Pope --, the director's light, but analytical take on faith seems toi thin to either fully entertain or provoke. And, well, how can one like it when there is a Shit Demon and a silent Alanis who calls the shots as God, huh?

There are a lot of movies about the Apocalypse, but few are as unfunny as this one. Furthermore, it seems to fancy itself an edgy theological satire. Its edgy plot revolves around the issue of plenary indulgences, the hottest religious issue of the early 16th century. Its satire revolves around ceaselessly affirming the most average, wishy-washy, meaningless, unchallenging, babbling lowest-common-denominator version of cream-cheese comfort-food "spirituality" to be found in 1999 America.
