This time around the werewolves are metaphors for haircuts, or maybe I misinterpreted that. If you like the horror/war mix I recommend R-Point.

A platoon of British soldiers hit the woods for routine training in the Scottish Highlands when they're besieged by blood-hungry werewolves. Marshall's debut is sharp, funny and often down-right cool, at least when its not beset by serious budget issues. The forest stuff is beautifully shot, but the film looks cheap and grainy and the werewolf costumes are underwhelming. Still, there are flashes of brilliance that show Marshall could work magic with more money, and with The Descent, he does.

Should have been a lot more fun than it was. 'Action/Horror' is a pretty damn misleading description, it's more of a comedy.

I'm not sure why I keep watching Neil Marshall movies, since they just seem to range from crappy to half-decent. Here we have an ok werewolf movie that starts out feeling like Predator with werewolves, then turns into Night of the Living Dead with werewolves. It kinda feels like they made the whole thing up as they went along too, as a lot of scenes feel pretty pointless beyond somebody on set saying "wouldn't it be cool if we did this?"

Werewolves attack some soldiers running training ops in a forest. This is a house siege-style action film where big rubber suit werewolves pop up outside of windows and British soldiers futilely dump ammo into them. Many people like this film and for what it is, it's 'aight and is probably all you're gonna get if what you want is Aliens with werewolves.

One of the most unexpectedly good movies I've seen. The characters are real and interesting, the plot progresses smoothly and logically, and the werewolf effects are some of the best ever. Lot's of fun.

A good set-up for such a simple but well-conducted genre exercise that goes from gory horror to the fort defense Carpenter/Hawks adventure. A few things get lost through the end, but the overall sense of madness in Marshall's cinema is already here, through fast-paced shots of the creepies werewolves you can imagine and lines about footy (England is playing against Germany, but these soldiers have to be in this exercise instead; massacre goes both ways, in favor of England and the wolves).

Pure popcorn. I give it props for lampshading its "Aliens" debt by pointing out that film itself was "Zulu" recast on a shake-and-bake colony. Pairs up nicely with Hyett's "Howl" from 2015.

Not many werewolf movies can get a positive review from me due to a childhood interest in the subject that leaves me overly critical, but Dog Soliders gets it right. The creation of suspense through trapping the movie's victims rather than throwing constant visuals of the threat should be lauded.

Dated effects (that were probably passable for the time), pretty good actors and solid pacing make a worthy action-horror creature film. As long as it’s not taken too seriously, and you can get past the limiting budget, it’s better than one may expect. I might appreciate a reimagining with a higher budget one day.

This is one of the most under-rated films ever made. It is a classy horror spoof unlike so many others. It is actually a good story line and acted very well by all involved and the humour is not cringe worthy it is just how you would imagine normal people speaking but this film's brilliance can be summed up with one quote - "We are now up against live, hostile targets. So, if Little Red Riding Hood should show up with a bazooka and a bad attitude, I expect you to chin the bitch" Brilliant film

Considering the piss poor budget this is some good action&tension in the darkness direction from Marshall. But the dialogue running in loops and screaming from far twists weighs it down. Could have used more of sneaky humor. Oh and -there is no Spoon-.

This film would honestly be a complete run of the mill werewolf horror flick if it wasn't for some sharp cinematography in places and good performances from Kevin McKidd and Sean Pertwee. Those things set it apart and make it a worthwhile watch. As an added bonus no one cries and thank God for that because I'm sick of it in horror flicks. Still unless you enjoy horror movies this won't win you over.

This film doesn't hark back to the Hammer days but looks instead to more recent action horror movies for its inspiration; this film is much more Aliens than Alien. Replace the colony complex with a claustrophobic farmhouse in Scotland and the aliens with werewolves. Add a non-Hollywood edge, stir in couple of small twists and mix with a good amount of dark and 'military forces' type humour and you've got a fair idea of what you're going to get... with bite!

A wonderful mix of black humor and action. May be a little too 'cheap' for some, but for me it was a breath of fresh air. Would recommend to anyone who tastes bile in their mouth when they witness the pathetic devolution of those creatures we all thought were cool when we were young into glitter-sprinkled metrosexual twats.

It didn't terrify me, but I don't think it was trying to. Instead, it seemed like it wanted to give me an entertaining creature film with a likable cast and some humorous dialogue. It did all of that, and when the film ended, I was disappointed not because it was a bad movie, but because I didn't think I got enough of it. The acting was solid, the tongue-in-cheek style it was created in made it all the more entertaining, and it ended up being really enjoyable.

Running around online, you see people praising this movie everywhere. As one who enjoys vampire/werewolf movies, I decided to rent it and see what the hype was all about. In my opinion...very little. While the story did keep me interested, I saw nothing to elevate this above your typical werewold fare.

Still the fun, gory werewolves versus soldiers film from my youth. A plot twist in the final quarter weakens the film badly by not making any real sense, and not adding anything to the film, but the comedic moments, film references and a solid cast including Sean Pertwee pad over this.

Not as bad as I was expecting, thankfully the characters have a sense of humour, and there is a definite sense of manic desperation towards the end as the guys steadily run out of options for survival. It's fun, although the action is pretty clumsy and there is a pall of B-movie hanging in the air, especially in the music and effects.

Great homegrown low budget splatter fun. It's short and snappy, cleverly written, very well directed and knows just how to shoot the monsters as a physical effect and make it work. It also unintrusively references a ton of cinema for the geeks among us and has a nice hands on approach to filmmaking. The downsides are somewhat weak characterization and a lazy interpretation of the classic transformation scene. Marshall is great with pace, tone and mechanics but not so good with human drama.

Splendidly ludicrous and gruesome midnight movie material, without any of the psychosexual drivel usually inherent in modern werewolf fare. Some shrug it off as an Aliens knock-off, and while it is a heavy borrower and payer of homage, it's designed to provide our basest animal expectations from movies about war and military combat by dressing up as a supernatural slasher picture.

This is fine, just not my thing. A horror movie crossed with a war movie with a lot of yelling and macho ooh-rah. It does its thing well with a gritty atmosphere and rising tension, but try as I might I couldn't care about anyone other than the two leads, and even they were only mildly interesting.

Very impressive despite clearly not having much of a budget. The handheld style and shaky cam is definitely way overused but the effect is great when done right. That scene of the werewolf climbing into the room with Wells asleep was downright chilling! Toward that end, I think it would have been better as a straightforward action/horror with less comedy. It was fine, but sometimes detracted from the suspense. All in all, definitely worth seeking out.

I hated this, which was foreseeable. Nothing but constant loud, violent, jumpy action sequences. I couldn't tell the characters apart and I didn't notice any humor in it. In my opinion this is a military or war movie more than a modern werewolf movie. My boyfriend made me watch this, later justifying himself with "I thought you would like this because you like American Werewolf in London." This movie has none of the charm of American Werewolf.

In the long line of ALIEN clones, this is a reasonable entry with the horror elements more effective at first while the menace is unseen (the fairly discreet prologue is arguably more unsettling than anything that follows). Hobbled by clear “make-do” budgetary constraints in the creature(s) make-up, Marshall still crafts a functional and enjoyable outing, and a good cast helps things run smoothly, with Cunningham especially effective emitting a sinister coldness.

It starts off rather cheesy and then gets very slow, which the editor tries to fix with an insane amount of cuts (most shots were held for only one to two seconds) to no avail. After that the film seems to calm down a bit and then it starts getting interesting. The werewolf attacks are very well done, with very good FX's. The film also manages to build nicely upon its previous scenes and finishes off well enough. Definitely worth checking out.

Because of Neil Marshall, I wnat to like this more. Because of Neil Marshall, the script feels like it needs another good wringing, or put some deleted scenes back in to explain where the who the what the. Otherwise, moments of awesome let down by moments of shonky cheapness. Still, Kevin McKidd does badass well, as later shown in Rome. THIRTEEN!
