A classic Southern tale of hilarity set in a sleepy Louisiana parish, Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood follows a group of lifelong friends who stage a rather unorthodox intervention to help a young playwright (Bullock) unravel the truth about her complicated, eccentric mother (Burstyn), find forgiveness and acceptance, and let go of her painful past. It's supposed to be cute, but I found it grating at times, embarrassing at others. And why am I being asked to sympathize with the mother? She's an awful drunk and a child abuser. Am I supposed to root for her as she mends her relationship with her estranged daughter? (Note: This is not a movie for women, as some will claim. This is not a movie fit for humans, regardless of their biology. Bad is bad, be it a matter of films or taste, and pinning it on a gender difference is misguided.)

Suckers for flinty bitchiness will find some endearing interest and appeal, especially when Burstyn and Smith are centre stage; during the lighter, more comic moments, it’s actually passable, but the problem comes with the melodramatic aspects of the plotting and character relationships, which seem rather facile and childish when the big revelations come; it’s surprising that Khouri didn’t have a better nose for the turgid plotting. If the cast list appeals to you, you could do far worse.

Worst movie of year 2002. Who wants to watch hysterical women almost two hours a row? Actors performances were ok, everything else not.

While this is nowhere near as profound as it thinks it is, it's still fun, and the acting or script might not be quite adequate material for the acting talent involved, it's perfectly reasonable, and should leave all but the most miserable among us with a nice, fluffy feeling, and, I ask you, what's wrong with that?

It was an ELEPHANT. Not an AIRPLANE. An ELEPHANT. Don't ruin the book with your little reinterpretation. Geez.
