China is a mess. This is a film with a reasonable amount of talking but no narration or interviews, made up of various slices of modern Chinese life. It's critical but seems focused on loose threads rather than a wide portrait of the society, trying to point out that not everything is rosy, rather than that everything is rotten. If I were more familiar with China this might be more meaningful, but as an outsider I'm left to infer an awful lot, and that makes things a bit less interesting.

portrait of urban chaos in modern china. told through fragmented found footage, weikai huang relays shattered short stories that range from the mundane to the tragic to the absurd. there are police arrests, abandoned babies, house fires, suburban floods, and even the discovery of a stash of amputated bear paws. it is probably worth noting that hardly anyone cares about or even notices the presence of the omnipresent camera. a fascinating ethnographic document.

Plays like a sci-fi view of some dystopian future, but the scary thing is that it's a documentary. Guangzhou is shown in a state of complete chaos with floods, civil unrest, crime and escaped animals being just some of the trials which the city is shown to face. The stream of disturbing events is impactful and unrelenting, creating a disturbing and frightening image of the depths of modern society.
