Viewed January 5, 2022. Even this early in his career, Assayas displays his rhythmic flair for storytelling through fleeting moments and sensations. While there are some occasional striking images, the drama feels thin and false the whole way through - I think it's partially because none of the performances are any good and partially because it's hard to make a movie about the music industry that feels authentic.

It takes guts to start your first film with a climax and focus rest of the film on the emotional fallout. It's remarkable Assayas mostly succeeds in keeping up the momentum of the starting climax. The plot does loose itself in the second act in relationships antics, when almost everyone in the group seems to sleep around with each other, tho this is realistic for the real interest and dealings of young adults. It's not flawless but it's a solid debut that shows a lot of promise.
