Weisz and McAdams are not only attractive, they craft believable and memorable characters. Castor Troy's brother (with a beard) is good too. But I've got to ask: What's with the spitting?

Low key, simmering romantic drama feels perpetually stuck in second gear - you keep waiting for the fireworks to start, and they never really do, with the film more intent on treating its frankly melodramatic developments with a plodding earnestness. Worth watching for Weisz and McAdams who are both fascinating in atypical roles for both actresses, and share some seriously sizzling chemistry.

"Disobedience" is a truly engaging character study, a harrowing tale of love in the face of deeply entrenched religious beliefs that portrays this with claustrophobic, melancholy fascination.

Great acting is the best I can say about this forbidden love story that plays out like a soap opera arthoused up with handheld camerawork and muted color grading. The penultimate sex scene is worth watching when it's out on YouPorn -- I never realised how much I want Rachel Weisz to spit in my mouth.

Propelled by the performances of its three leads and artistic direction from Sebastian Lelio, Disobedience is a highly cerebral film about the confines that can be present in one's faith and practice that, while thought-provoking, is too cold to have the emotional impact for which it aims.

Completely flat. The worst part is, the characters felt entirely unchanged by the end. And what's maybe worse than that, is you don't care.

Feels almost impactful around the start (considering it's social and cultural context) - and then crumbles with the most anti-climatic resolution of the main relationships.

No No Nope. A lead character that makes dumb decisions just to help moving on the limp-ass plot. Unrealistic lesbian sex scene (IN the middle of a hottel room. Standing up. Being the only girl you've ever fucked. Riiiiight.). Two straight leads. Much much cringe. No Nope Thank you

I haven't read the source material, so I wouldn't know what to blame for this movie's lack of depth and direction. The actors do as good a job as they can given how they are written, but there is still something lacking. The director tries to show us the closed world the story takes place in, but that has an unintended effect of monotonousness. Especially Esti lacks the depth that would have driven the story at a much better pace.

Well-shot but inauthentic and dull. Weisz is great (as always) but casting McAdams as a British Jew is absolutely inexplicable, as she can't pass for either.

So hell-bent on being dull that it almost becomes art. Almost.

Quality drama with good and bold acting by the two Rachels: Weisz and McAdams. It was refreshing to see McAdams in something this and I hope she keeps taking more chances with her roles. Nivola provides solid support. Orthodox jewish community is portrayed interestingly and in my opinion quite respectfully. There was still something missing that kept the film from rising to its full potential, perhaps because the plot follows quite familiar paths for an indie film and lacks proper surprises.

I work for some of those North London Jews and lemme tell you, Alessandro Nivola gets it down to a T.

Best I can tell, one of the movie's primary messages is that Orthodox Jews are kind of pricks when it comes to ways of thinking and living that go against theirs. I don't know if that's intentional, but it's there. I'm left wishing that the chemistry and relationship between Weiss and McAdam felt more like real people experiencing these things, and not actresses portraying them. There was an undercurrent of inauthenticity there that I couldn't shake. Worth a watch, but I admit, I hoped for more.

Echoes some Israeli films about Haredi repression, including "The Secrets" which was also lesbian-themed, but "Disobedience" is much better-produced. Good acting and a reasonably authentic picture of ultra-orthodox judaism, and I honestly wasn't expecting the Rachels kissing and love scenes to be so hot (if they're acting those, they deserve Oscars). Don't expect the unexpected from the script, though. It's not unwatchable, just majorly corny.

I thoroughly enjoyed Rachel Weisz and Rachel McAdams being together, making out and kissing. But I thoroughly detested every single scene with Jewish religious traditions and the unbearable unrelenting Jewish singing. On balance it was barely worth watching. Half of it is absolutely brilliant and exciting, and half of it is horrendous grinding drudgery.
