Stone cold. All of Melville's later films boasted an icy detachment, but here it's almost staggering. The entire color palette is blue, and the dialog is even more sparse than in Le Samourai. The film's plot relies on the circumstantial, and both the police and criminals think they're always one step ahead of each other. A nice, but all too early farewell from a stand-out director.

While it's a slight pity about the model train and helicopter, this is a much better than average, if downbeat, version of the interchangeability of cop and criminal theme. Here, the story, action and characters seem almost a pretext for staging a presentation of their mutual dependence understood as rooted in repressed homosexuality and the elaborate formations that are concocted to prevent it from rising to the surface. All the blues removed from THE GODFATHER resurface here six months later.

Not as well done as other Melvilles I've yet seen. The toy train and helicopter are too obvious, as are a few backdrops. The cool factor is still there, but it suffers when you're drawn out by the cheap effects.

Melville's shallow imitation of Melville. Really lacks the depth of his other work. You don't get to know nearly enough of the characters to care for anything playing out, but the movie constantly insists that you should. Anyways, the trademark Melville noir style is intact and still potent enough to carry you through the movie. The acting is really decent, especially Delon does well with the little he has to work with.

My second Melville-film, and alowly I feel love growing between us. The settings, the staging of movement, looks, camera and tension building up in most of the scenes, are impressive. Alain Delon is good (as the rest), and Catherine Deneuve was a real princess 40 years ago, apparently! What it lacks, is more detailed storytelling. The police's work WILL eventually be very easy if the director doesn't bother to explain how the thief was caught. Nuf' said.

AKA Un Flic or A Cop, Melville's final film is a pretty strong thriller with Melville's usual late style. Bleak, with a washed out color palette, a fairly standard plot is elevated by Delon and some great thriller scenes, most notably the real time train robbery scene, which is cleverly conceived/executed. The conclusion is slightly disappointing, as the thing that breaks the case isn't really brought about in any kind of meaningful way by the protagonist. Enjoyable stuff, though somewhat rushed

In his final film, Jean-Pierre Melville ascends to an almost otherwordly perfection of the suffocatingly cold atmosphere of his late career. Even as the heist antics start to get more outlandish (where'd they get that helicopter?!), the cops and robbers chase never felt as elegant as it does here. At only 90 minutes, the character buildup before the central heist and the subsequent unraveling of plans is a bit rushed, but Alain Delon's eyes still speak volumes about his character.

Plus: Toda a sequência do roubo do trem é sensacional. Box Versátil Filme Noir Francês Volume 1.

Un Flic is a heist film surrounded by a cop's disillusionment with his job. There are some good sequences here (both heists are memorable) but there are also parts that jolt you out of the story. I'm giving this a slightly-higher score due to my love of Melville movies, even though this isn't his strongest work.

Solid if conventional noir made enjoyable with good pacing and a couple of great setpieces. A lot of open space in the narrative, dialogue and soundtrack create a nice sense of cold detachment and tension but the story is nothing really remarkable.

A stoically procedural crime-caper that further proves Melville could make espionage as intense and as exciting as full-on bombastic entertainment. Fun stuff, with very blue and very awesome cinematography, housed in this tight and economic film.

Fell asleep in a few small bursts during the first half, not due to boredom. Hence, I didn't fully catch all of the nuances while watching. Melville's style is very good when it comes to creating tension and pacing. Beautifully fitting cinematography as well.

Melville's last movie still bears those distinctive stylistic hallmarks that he finished developing in the mid-60s with Le Samourai. It's still recognizable as the work of an auteur... but as for the script, he's gone on auto-pilot.

The ambition outstripped the budget, but outside of the cheap toy helicopter it's a pretty typical intense bit of film.

a mesmerising if completely unbelievable helicopter/train sequence is surrounded by a very typical noir. they seemed like two separate movies. not an awful lot of substance to be found but enough detachment makes it interesting enough.

The opening scene is dynamite, and it has Melville's usual dose of world-weary fatalism, but man, what was up with the most over-elaborate train robbery in the history of cinema? Not only did it look fake, but the execution of the heist was so over-the-top and unnecessarily complex that it took me right out of the film. I mean, wouldn't you achieve the same objective if you got on at the station, locked the guy in the closet, and then got off at the next station?!
