In the Sachsenhausen concentration camp, a group of prisoners with skills ranging from finance to forgery are put to work under the direction of a master counterfeiter manufacturing perfect replicas of foreign bank notes. As the Nazis plot to cause the collapse of the U.S. and British economies by flooding their markets with false bills, some of the prisoners use delaying tactics to forestall the plan. (oscar.com)

Pretty good WWII tale actually paints some of the Jews at concentration camps as villains, in an audacious move. By mostly showing what happens to the counterfeiters (and not the many others involved in the war, directly or indirectly), it is not a good history lesson. Instead, it is an interesting facet of a horrible conflict which involves moral questions that aren't easily answered.

Engaging movie based on the Nazi counterfeiting effort, Operation Bernhard, with remarkable performance by Karl Markovics. Well-made holocaust movie without the usual in-your-face kind of melodrama.

Very well made film with an interesting story. It provides a view of a different aspect of WWII and poses some interesting questions about the actions of the various characters.

Good story, but the structure saps most of the tension. It's difficult to identify with the fear of the inmates when the only character given a real focus is already seen to survive. It would be more successful in its goals if it was strictly chronological, to give the audience some uncertainty like the inmates feel.

Being a film about WW2, it wasn't as touching or upsetting as some of the other films I've seen. Nevertheless, I found the story about these Jewish prisoners in a Nazi prisoner camp making counterfeit money for the Nazi's quite interesting. The underlying question is one of morality. Do you make the counterfeit money as perfect as you can to save your own skin? Or do you sabotage the process to save those of others? I'd like to think that I would have done the latter, but I kind of doubt it...

Another film (the other being The Rape of Europa) where my knowledge of WWII and the Nazis increased, most interestingly, about Operation Bernhard. The film, while having some great scenes and great acting, doesn't have that strong emotional impact you'd expect from this type of film. Sort of a 'Hollywood' feel and especially apparent in the ending as well..

A movie that keeps you interested all through. Shows the resilience of the Jewish prisoners and their resourcefulness to be able to survive . It really does prod deep into your moral fabric. Do you abet your enemies just to survive. A really good movie. A must watch for all.

A bit Schinder's Listy. But never boring. Still, if I had to choose to watch a holocaust drama in future, I'd choose Schindler over watching this again.

A well-told story which fails to impress. It doesn't matter that it's great technically, if it doesn't say anything new. The viewer simply doesn't carre both for protagonists and other prisoniers in the german concentration camp. Sad, as the story had a potential for a good action drama with Holocaust in the background.

A nice telling of a little-known story of the concentration camps that blurs the lines between the victims and the perpetrators. Our Jewish protagonist is a career criminal, the Kommandant is no fan of the Nazis. Each, in their own way, is simply doing what they can to survive in a world not of their making. Neither are sympathetic characters, and we like to think in their place we would show more moral fibre, but who could truly say they could when forced into such a horrific world?

There are certain things I really like in this film (the directing for example), but there are also certain things I really hate. I'm attracted to the story, but the character fail to convince me and care for them. The things I hate are to hard to ignore, otherwise this would be a great movie.

Most Holocaust movies are pretty good, and people generally tend to be mindful about treating the subject matter carefully. This one is about as good as most of them. It's based on a true story (although many of the details were fictionalized) of a team of Jews hand-picked from the concentration camps to forge currency for the Nazis. It examines the moral complexities one would expect from such a situation with a decent amount of subtlety and realism. Well-done with good performances.

I recently read Art Spiegelman's 'Maus', which was a similar tale of survival by any means necessary in the worst of times. The central performances were excellent, and it is a well told angle on one man's journey through the holocaust.

Marvelously impressionistic beginning, which draws you right in and then it's like you're there in the midst of all that hell. Unfortunately though the battle between Sorowitsch and Burger began to seem a bit like a Point/Counterpoint debate, which gave the proceedings a somewhat forced quality. But the grit and wonderfully grave tone throughout are most resonant indeed.

The movie is most impressive in the way it makes the viewer feel the moral dilemma of being a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp forced to collaborate with them. It takes it's time, but it's strength is how well it's makes the viewer think about what his choices would have been in such a situation.

A bunch of Jewish KZ interns during WWII are singled out because they're good at printing or counterfeiting, and put to work financing the Nazi war effort by printing fake pounds and dollars. If they're successful, they're a powerful nazi weapon. If they fail, they'll get killed. Slightly predictable but very worthy drama.

The script is unfortunate. However the directing and acting are good, and the production team does the best it can with the script they've got to work with. The ending was poor. What he does at the very end, did that really happen? If not, why add it? The true story is compelling enough. Still, it's probably one of the better WWII concentration camp films, at least since Jakob the Liar.

I agree with the review by Turin in that it isn't anything new, however this is based on a true story, so it should be more of a depiction than an innovation. It's a well done movie, but if you don't get a chance to see it then you're really not missing out on a whole lot.
