During the Prussian army's invasion to Poland in 1793, a young Polish nobleman Jakub is saved from the imprisonment by a stranger who wants in return to obtain a list of Jakub's fellow conspirators. Following his mysterious saviour across the country, Jakub sees the overall chaos and moral corruption including his father's death and his girlfriend's betrayal. Being apparently demented by what he has seen, he commits a number of seemingly motiveless and gory killings. (imdb)

Zulawski at his most extreme and shrill, a pure medieval nightmare on film. Political allegory all gothic and bloody. Sometimes TOO exhausting but its so visually cool its worth the occasional headache and damaged ear drum.

2024'de #IzlediğimFilmler ; 170. Diabel @IMDb 'deki listemden bir filtre yaptım ve bu muhteşem film karşıma çıktı. Büyük perdede izlemeyi çok isterdim. Oldukça zor bir izlemelik ancak temposu, oyunculukları ve Zulawski'nin çılgınlıkları ile bambaşka bir deneyim sunuyor. 8/10

It really tries to be extreme but results in characters being caricatures. I didn't find it visually good let alone striking as some reviews say. I'd say the best part is acting, but there's a lot of senseless screaming and pushing around which is annoying after some time. Really exhausting film.

Definitivamente excelente, mesmo não estando no clima de Zulawski quando o assisti, é apenas o quarto filme do diretor que assisto, o que é meio impressionante o quanto são poucos considerando o quanto gosto dos filmes e estilo dele. DVD Lume Filmes.

Right from the killer (ha-ha) opening, the film maintains the same frenetic, furious, cold, and dirty mood through its entirety. This mish-mash myriad of episodic moments of revisitations in life (and plenty or murder) feels plodding and meandering, but come the finale this film feels like a very hallow and darkly opinionated worldview that exposes the core primitiveness in man, no matter how much class he tries to douse himself in.
