Detroit Rock City
1999
Comedy, Music
1h 35m
Four members of a high school band called Mystery do everything they can to attend a KISS concert in Detroit. In order to make it to the show they must steal, cheat, strip, deal with an anti-rock mom and generally do whatever it takes to see the band that has inspired them to be musicians. Plays like a KISS advertisement but the GIV'R mentality leaves the viewer with a smile on their face. (imdb)

A mildly entertaining retro romp similar to The Stöned Age and many other films of the same kind that were popular in the mid to late '90s. Its not great, I don't get all the love, but at least it was entertaining.

I am guessing I would like this more if Kiss didn't suck and Gene Simmons wasn't a giant walking piece of shit.

It's a comfort watch for me, but I can't deny that there's a funnier movie hidden in here somewhere. I want my band to sound and look as cool as Mystery.

A self-indulgent stoner comedy without much of a stone, this lethargically sparks to life during a few crude (but when-is-it-never-funny) bathroom gags, but this is really a case of "been there, done that"; perhaps most notable as a cringe-inducing love fest for "co-stars" KISS (surprising how little KISS figure in the otherwise excellent pop soundtrack). Furlong and friends do their best, but none of them make a particularly strong impression; snarling Shaye is always fun to watch!

Rarely has a movie felt more explicitly tailored to a teenage me. This delightful romp has that classic feeling of hanging with your degenerate buddies all while rebelling against your stuck-up parents and a misunderstanding society in a way that really clicks, especially for KISS fans.

An enjoyable comedic adventure about a gang of misfits trying to get to see their fave band KISS. Not a unique story being told, but it is well done and has it's moments. The man with the long tongue's hot wife even makes an appearance.

(Viewed on 25/04/12): With the commercial decline of heavy guitar music, films about rock mad teens have become increasingly quaint. Considering Simmons' involvement, it was always going to be a tribute to Kiss, but it narrowly dodges being an exercise in shameless self promotion because it's a funny comedy about the excitement of youth, the only time in life where music artists take on a god-like presence. D.R.C is an entertaining throwback to a bygone era that radiates a doe-eyed charm.

My 2nd favorite wacky kids coming of age flick after superbad. Tons of outlandish scenarios keep it moving. Good jokes good cast nice dose of nostalgia of being a young punk with nothing to do

Time has washed away nearly all my memories of this film. The most I can remember is not really liking the music, which says more about my taste in music than my opinion of this movie. Nonetheless I'm not really willing to re-watch it.

Does a good job at generating nostalgia for an era in which I wasn't even alive. You get caught up in the excitement of the lead characters and there are enough funny moments that don't resort to being mere gags.

I'm not a KISS fan. I was bored and couldn't sleep one night and this was on TV, so I sat through it. Not as horrible as I thought it would be, but it's obviously really really dumb.

Maybe after all those disco movies, I'm relieved to see what looks like a bunch of Midwest rockers that i can relate to better, or maybe it's just a fun romp. Some of the interactions while over the top are still about right, and the coming of age aspect is played down. Finally, i get to feel nostalgic about high school.

A rock and roll adventure. A kiss produced film about 4 teens roughly to resemble Gene, Paul, Ace, and Peter that will do anything to see Kiss in concert. This movie has its funny parts a kick ass soundtrack and even Gene Simmons very sexy partner Shannon Tweed.

Just a dang enjoyable film to watch. The one dude really wishes he was Jason Mewes, but that's neither here nor there. A naturally great soundtrack, too.

Detroit Rock City is about 4 friends who desperately wish to see their idols, KISS each one over coming obstacles and coming to age on their own terms. Despite KISS being completely shitty Detroit Rock City is actually a good movie. I very much enjoyed it.

Some good laughs here and there throughout the film. It's worth watching watch if the story of a group of friends being stupid and doing stupid stuff sounds entertaining.

This movie has several entertaining moments and is one of those movies where the journey is more important than the ending. The plot is so simple, but the film isn't out to break down walls or push the envelope. It's just pure nostalgia about four kids who are obsessed with KISS in 1978.

It starts off with a quick pace and hyperactive cuts that grow old really quick. Luckily it slows things down a bit and is ultimately a quite fun and entertaining comedy which does a good job at taking you back to the 70's. The characters and story are clichéd and some scenes are pretty annoying, but it's not a bad way to spend 90 mins. Naturally, it works a lot better if you are a fan of KISS, but it should satisfy even casual viewers.
