a silent melodrama without intertitles! i'm becoming more impressed with bauer the more i see. the first couple i saw added random plot elements without justification, but this one is his simplest yet: a rich man likes a woman, so he enslaves her. the key is in the lack of dialogue. the performances must be subtler and visual plotting tighter in order to convey information. bauer even threw in some ironic juxtaposition during the boathouse scene in order to clarify emotional positioning.

Rather tame adultery drama from Yevgeni Bauer. He usually adds a lot more melodrama before his tragic ends. The film making is still fluid, but the story just isn't one of his more interesting ones.
