The future of film. Gone are long establishing shots and powerful monologues, and in their place are quick, orgasmic bursts of tomfoolery, random, yet irrelevant pop culture references, and what can only be defined as visual reconstructions of twitterisms such as wtf and lolwut. It's like watching a meme in motion, barreling down the information highway at breakneck speeds, caring little for the carnage it leaves in its wake. It's information overload for people only as smart as their phones.

Not a moment's rest in this high-school slasher, 90's-referencing, Scott Donny Darko Pilgrim Community mashup. At times the quirkyness becomes a bit annoying, but when something unexpected happens (give it about 10 seconds) you're back on board once more. Funny how a whole lot of small details and weird reveals come together at the end. I have rewatched Detention many a time since I wrote my initial review, and love it a bit more every time.

Original, off beat horror-com plays on all the cliches and tropes from teen slashers. Imagine Scott Pilgrim vs. The World set in the Scream universe.

I tend to think that most great movies can transcend generations and appeal to everyone, but I can easily see this one baffling anyone under 30 or so. It's one of pop music's pre-eminent visual stylists throwing out the rulebook and mocking a youth culture obsessed with technology, status, and nostalgia, and it hits perfectly. The first scene is the most annoying one, which helps. I guess I can't begrudge anyone for hating this, but I think it's one of the best movies of this decade.

I saw this when Joseph Kahn came to my school and he told us that he made this movie for our generation, our multi-tasking, twitter/facebook/text-at-the-same-time generation. Stuffed with references that you'll have to google later and fast-paced enough that you won't even have time to sneak a text in, it had me laughing non-stop and sometimes I wasn't even sure why.

Quite the Fun House! With the mixture of the 90s and the Millennium. From Back to the Future and Freaky Friday, to Breakfast Club and Slasher movies. From Classic alien abduction/close encounters to Weird Science. It's all over the place and reel into a tightly organized fun, enjoyable film. A second viewing would be entertaining for those who want to catch all the references, because it goes fast! Not many movies to club this many references without it being lame, but this was totally gnarly!

Kahn takes elaborate and novel approaches to filming even the simplest scenes, making them dazzling and memorable. Not a single frame is wasted. You don't even get time to laugh at the jokes, and are quickly trained not to bother. In the end, nothing is throwaway, that is unless you feel you've wasted your time altogether. For better or worse, this is a hyper-contemporary, perfectionist work by a writer-director with a deep and confident understanding of how to tell a story.

This movie shouldn't work, but it does. The whole is less than the parts, but there are some very good parts. This film wants to try and do something different and it never takes itself too seriously which is refreshing. Talkin' 'bout my generation :p

One of those out of left field surprise delights. I'd never even heard of this before stumbling across it on Netflix. The art and description are a little misleading as this is far more comedy than horror. What it is, is a 90s-adoring post-modern delight. Whip-smart and on a 90 minute sugar high, it's not for everyone and would be quite wearying to a lot of viewers. I still can't understand why it has more negative reviews than positive.

Scott Pilgrim vs Freddie vs Jason. I know the film isn't really horror but I wanted to write that title for a while now.

Painful to watch: a terrible horror spoof with no funny jokes and whose sense of comic timing is to pace everything as fast as possible. It does hold interest in that it becomes so bizarre and complex, so self-referential, mannered and filled with every stylistic tic imaginable, that it feels almost like an experimental film.

Simply unwatchable. It feels like it took everything that's awful in Scott Pilgrim and made it 10 times worse. How is this even possible... oh wait Kahn is a director of Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears music videos. I guess that explains it, I only wish I checked that info before watching this.

Fucking Hanson's MMMBop out of nowhere and that is the essence of this movie. It tries so HARD at whatever it is it tried to do. I begrudgingly kinda liked it.

A spastic horror comedy that indulges itself in 90's references and other horror movies too. The movie's pace is relentless going through plot points and characters like it was on ecstasy Calling the Torque for the Scream franchise would be pretty apt; if that's a good thing or not I dunno, but it's pretty fun.

Scream that forgot to take its ADD meds. One of the most enjoyable films I've seen in years. I didn't know it was possible to make a feel good slasher movie but this is it. Ignore the bad reviews. They didn't get it. It's not a film for everyone but if you have a fondness for geeky humour, 90s references and AMAZING payoffs that get even better on a second viewing, then this is the movie for you.

Lightening fast and mind-bendingly bizarre, this is a film on a mission to bombard the audience with stimuli and see what sticks. There are so many references you can (and likely will) miss half of them and not even realize. Honestly, words can't describe how insane this movie is.

Detention is a very enjoyable film, at least, if you fit into its target audience. If you're not someone who can process such insane circumstances, a lack of focus, and a bevy of '90s references, then you'll want to stay away from this film. However, if you can, and this sounds like something for you, you're probably going to adore it. If nothing else, it's an ambitious work and I personally found it to be fantastic.

I have to be honest, from the start to halfway in, I really didn't like it at all. Then suddenly I was engaged, I have no clue how that happened. It is a continuous bombardment of references, visuals, clichés and whatnot. Once you give up on trying to follow all of them it becomes bearable. But if this is the future of film I give up.

I admit I laughed a few times. But most of it was rather tedious, just one badly executed 80s or 90s referenced followed by another. As far as bad movies go, it's on the watchable side, even occasionally enjoyable. There's a semblance of effort put into the plot, even if it's mostly cribbing scenes from other movies and putting an "ironic twist" on them. But at the end of the day, the film does nothing with those references, no real jokes, no commentary, just wink wink remember this.

Well this is hard to score. Half Juno, half Scream, a bit of Scott Pilgrim thrown in there. Some of it is painfully indie, but you just have to admire it for its exuberance and commitment.

It's funny how on Twitter Kahn is going on and on about how edgy and groundbreaking and a labor of love and sui generis the whole thing is. Which might be if it came out a decade earlier. It has energy and wit, but the constant cross-referencing marks it as instantly outdated in pop culture.
