Despicable Me 4

STOP AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

There's nothing awful about it, but it's mostly just half-developed random feeling subplots that never seem to really go anywhere or pay off, all mashed together. Didn't have as many laughs as the previous ones.

Despicable Me 3, and even Minions 2, were steps in the right direction. Much better than this lousy collection of 8 or 10 different stories thrown together. There is even a Terminator 2 reference. Yes, it is that lazy.

Urghh… the minions offer some relief from the humdrum banality of a franchise that ran out of steam and ideas quite some time ago. This is exactly what you’ve seen before from the series, but wrapped around a tiresome half-baked collection emotional development plot lines, that even for a simple ‘feel-good’ kids movie feel lazily thrown together. Incidentally, also genuinely the closest I have ever come to falling completely asleep in the cinema. Fuck I’m getting old.

Enjoyed this more than the 2nd and 3rd ones.

For whatever reason, this particular brand of mass-produced children's entertainment goes down much easier than most others. Mostly (I think) because it steals clear of the otherwise ever-present schmaltzy sentimentality American animation in this category is known for.

Not bad for 4th film in the series (not even counting the Minions spin-offs). The story is very disjointed; Gru family undercover in small town USA, parenthood challenges, heist sub-plot, Superhero Minions, etc. It feels like the script was built around separate gags. Some work better than others. Maxime is a rather bland antagonist and the film would have worked (better) without him. Still not too bad as far as family entertainment goes.

It's the same sequence of events: I take the kids to watch another Minions movie. I laugh at the cheap gags. I fall asleep 2/3 through but wake up in time for the happy ending and the credits gags. I leave feeling the film wasn't that bad. Illumination recycling character models from the Secret Life of Pets franchise. Fav scenes: I can't believe they got so much mileage out of the vending machine setup.

I still find the whole bad guy as good dad schtick fun although having to crowbar in a dad life lesson each episode is starting to wear thin and there are barely any laughs. The voice cast is great, though, and the animation is fantastic! Still, am I the only one who has never liked the minions? I find all of their antics dull and a deflating from the main story. It's been that way since the first film, too. Seeing as I continue to see a million minion toys everywhere, clearly I stand alone.

Minions is an annoyance I appreciate. Even this, with it's superhero and supervillain mockery. Now I want them to do a Minions Multiverse type spoof, so that it becomes clear to everyone how stupid all that stuff is, and end that hero craze once and for all.

These movies are always exactly what one would expect, a solid 5/10, no more no less.
