Despite suffering from the 'I happen to have Mr McLuhan right here' syndrome that is inherent in all historical dramas involving great people from the past, this does a good job at capturing the intellectual ferment that accompanied the rise of the resistance to the dictatorship of the bourgeoisie.

I wanted to like this movie so bad. But in the end, it does not spend a lot of time on Marx and Engels' ideas. The love story between Engels and his wife is romanticized into such a cliché story that it becomes awkward. Cinematography is bland except for the use of light in a few scenes.
