Der Hund von Baskerville

It exists and has been restored! Some of the early reels are missing with added stills and description, but the rest and the climax are intact, and it's so amazing watching Fritz Rasp in that maniac role! Everybody who's got any interest in Sherlock Holmes knows about The Hound of the Baskervilles. It's probable the most famous Sherlock Holmes story, and to my knowledge this is the only silent version of the story that exists...? Totally worth checking-out for Sherlock fans.

As much as I admire Rathbone and Bruce as Mr Homes and Dr Watson, Blackwell and Seroff sure give them a run for their money here! Sherlock Holmes the dandy and Dr Watson the at-times hopeless but ultimately dependable companion go to work here against a backdrop of German expressionism on the boggy moors and in the dark passages of Baskerville Hall. All very moody and entertaining. I would not mind spending a few days in Mr Homes' lair on the moor; a classy and literal version of the 'man-cave'.
