Good but...

Drags at parts but nevertheless is an interesting surrealist metaphor for how Poland dealt with the aftermath of the Holocaust.

For a more fulfilling story of the Jewish legend of dybbuk watch an older Polish film called Der Dibuk [The Dybbuk] (1937) instead.

Rather funny and novel, if several steps short of a game-changer. The biggest takeaway for me is the way it expertly reflects the crushing ascetism of these small mining towns where there is nothing to do but work long hours and drink for generation after generation. It's possibly a little too bleak (or Polish?) a black comedy for me to love as much as sort of admire.

"Demon" grabs you from the start. Cinematography is top notch and takes great use of the landscapes and machinery. It's at it's best when it's mixing scenes from the booze filled wedding and eerily hinting that everything is not well with the protagonist. Eventually it needs to slow down and explain the "dybbuk", and that's when it loses some steam. It does recover somewhat towards the end, but ends on a very different note than where it started and feels like a missed opportunity.
