Everyone has experienced the mystery of deja vu, but what if the feelings were actually warnings sent from the past or clues to the future? It is deja vu that guides ATF agent Doug Carlin through an investigation into a shattering crime. Called in to recover evidence after a bomb sets off an explosion on a New Orleans Ferry, Carlin is about to discover that what most people believe "is only in their heads" is actually something far more powerful.

Deja Vu sells itself as an entertaining suspense thriller with action, romance and a quirky time travel concept. But this experience is just a complete blur. Denzel Washington to be fair is as reliable as ever and he elevates this film dramatically. But Deja Vu requires a forgiving audience who don't have the capacity to think. The time travel concept just doesn't work. Time and time again the plot conveniently and unexplainably turns itself inside and out until you just don't care anymore.

The movie felt like it was written by Donald Kaufman. Washington is a great actor, but it felt like he was struggling against a plot that was contrived and full of science so preposterous it made me draw comparisons to the Core. It wouldn't have been nearly so bad if the movie were more tongue in cheek and didn't seem so serious and sincere throughout.

Déjà Vu is really good for its first hour, and pretty bad for the second, unless you still aren't tired of action movies with the most basic of plots. The science doesn't make a lot of sense, the ending is frustrating, and the mystery ends up taking a back seat to a man trying to change the past, despite being told multiple times that he cannot. There are good moments, but they're pushed aside for the bad and outright ridiculous.

The technology in this movie is what really ruined it for me. It's as if the director read the first paragraph of a Wikipedia page on time travel and scrawled out a couple of ideas on a honey roasted peanuts wrapper.

A much better script than Tony Scott's last movie Domino. Denzel Washington is, as usual, excellent. I was disappointed to see that Tony Scott toned down his trademark grunge-ish editing style but there are still traces of it in the camera work which I was happy to see. Still not as good as Man on Fire but far more intelligent and clever than the average Jerry Bruckheimer produced piece.

Really slow start, but the concept for the first half, while sketchy, is fascinating. The second half is entertaining, but feels rushed, and the ending a bit abrupt and not fully satisfying. Also showing the very last scene in the trailer is pretty ballsy.

(Viewed on 21/02/14): Scott was a rarity in the sense that he reinvented his style in late career while most of his contemporaries were stuck on autopilot and/or struggling to connect with modern audiences. His use of montage in particular became more daring, and it's very much on display in Deja Vu, resulting in beautifully layered images cast on reflective surfaces. Perhaps he knew the scripts were ordinary and wanted to keep himself interested. Deja Vu is routine. Scott gives it purpose.

Impressively expensive and complex opening tableau is the prelude to an increasingly absurd tale, an absurdity not only in terms of the premise but also in terms of character motivation and behaviour. Nevertheless, for those willing to unconditionally suspend disbelief, the narrative may just about succeed in holding interest for the duration. Generally well-shot.

The idea behind this movie was great, but what they've actually made of it could have been better. But nevertheless the film is still pretty good, better than other movies of this kind. Normally I don't like Denzel, but in this movie, he's good. And I think this movie has one of the weirdest and most memorable scenes of the last year in it: The scene where he's chasing the guy 3,5 days ago. I really liked this.

I had no idea what this was going into it, so that helped the mystery aspect of the experience. I applaud Denzel Does NOLA for truly going all in on its concept, and at the same time the elements of the movie don't work. And Denzel goes all out, which works but also doesn't work at times. I'm conflicted. There are so many better movies about time travel, but how many of them feature Denzel and explosions galore?

Unlike many here thought this was quite an enjoyable throwaway, yes, main premise (time travel) may not hold up when closely examined but there's no time to think while the movie's running - when that factor becomes the "deuc ex machina" IMO. As I infer first half so-so, second half is good. Washington plays well.

a very solid scifi movie thanks to its clever and interesting premise: the ability to look into the past. Like so many time travel movies it is best to not to think too much about those paradoxes and take it with a heavy dose of suspense of disbelief and just watch it for it's entertainment factor and focus more on the characterization than the plot mechanics.

One would think the combination of Denzel Washington, Val Kilmer and Tony Scott would produce something worth seeing, but this demonstrates that hypothesis to be gravely mistaken. Excellent thriller. Denzel Washington and Paula Patton were great in it. I was a little confused by the time travel (as I always am), but enjoyed the movie nevertheless. Since I saw this after a few seasons of "Person of Interest," it's interesting to see Jim Caviezel as playing an evil character here.

i'm all for vulgar auteurism inasmuch as i encourage searching for artistry in what is ostensibly trash/populist cinema, but the goodness here is due to the inherently resonant concept rather than the filmmaking, and it could be WAY better with a more thoughtful creative team behind it. i got really frustrated by how much fertile territory was either explored clumsily or not at all. "brace yourselves, you're about to witness a murder" may as well be the opening title card.

Its great to see a mainstream film take a uninhibited swan dive into such an abstract concept, knowing full well the science makes no sense and far more concerned with the concept instead. Scott also takes advantage of it as a director, especially an inspired split-screen sequence set completely within a speeding car. Its a shame though such an idea is squandered in a tedious thriller structure. Perversely as well, I missed the brain melting cinematic spasms from Domino (2005).

Well it starts and ends with a bang, but in between it's nothing special. I did like it a bit more than my PSI though. I'm not one to nitpick every single detail so the sci-fi elements didn't really bother me, but it does lack the execution of the truly great sci-fi thrillers. The acting was pretty average, and the film is probably lucky that the plot distracts the viewer from the acting. An average film, one I wouldn't watch again, but certainly don't regret watching.

Okay, so he goes back in time to save the woman and when he succeeds (after dying) he feels a sense of what...what could it be? What word is there for this term...? Oh yeah, the sense of impending doom. If time travel were even theoretically possible this might be interesting, but I think the paradoxical time stuff should be buried and forgotten. Multiple dimensions or no, it never makes any sense. There is one universe, and there ain't no 'reverse.'

Not the sophisticated thriller it’s trying to sell itself as, more a flashy popcorn job, with creative decisions benefiting stylistic gimmicks rather than substance (e.g. the goggle chase). The plot becomes a bit too much, with the whole time travel thing hard to suspend your disbelief from. Absorbing and visually engaging but ultimately rather forgettable, at no point whatsoever do you even begin to care about the girl, and as the story develops your interest in everything else wanes too.

The movie is made in a nice style , and has as an always strong acting Denzel Washington. But really liked the musical score by Harry Gregson-Williams. Didn't like the story that much. I like to compare it a bit with Enemy of the states wich we both see new surveillance technology , but in Deja Vu it is a bit over the top. So I like enemy of the state better. First of all, i don't go with a saying, that plot holes are inevitable in time travel flick. Scriptwriters could have done much, much better. Characters are shallow and annoying. There is very little logic in their actions, and so it's impossible to take any performances seriously. This movie might just be acceptable as a background for a popcorn eating, but if you want intelligent film dealing with time travel - look elsewhere.
