Robin Williams bakes penis shaped cookies, which are then pulled out of a bag in front of children on live TV. If you can't laugh at that, you are probably from Utah or something.

Oh, what this movie could have been! I'm still not sure how you can make a film about a jerkish ex-children's show star who plots the assassination of his successor boring, but this movie somehow manages to do just that. Given a C for the few scenes that are genuinely funny.

This should be great but everything misfires in some fashion, it's weird. Too much wide eyed wackiness from Williams & Norton, not enough cruelty.

Breathtakingly cynical, hilariously mean-spirited (albeit with a good heart) and with a great cast having a ball playing against type. It's a bit uneven - the conventional romance parts sag a little - but it's visually inventive and often very funny.

I don't really remember this movie so well, but the few memories I have are fond: Ed Norton is brilliant as the idiot do-goody rhino, and Williams shines as the murderous, fallen-from-grace host of children's tv show. And there's always something interesting about someone who wishes the best of best - cutest of cute - ill well.

This movie was an unexpected slice of genius. I'd heard it was dark, but it was a full-on classic noir, almost felt like Who Framed Roger Rabbit, but even more biting. And the casting was simply genius, both Edward Norton and Robin Williams cast against type and turning in admirable performances. The art direction was great, the characters lovable... I can see why it flopped, but it's a damn shame, I'd love to see more from Resnick.

Okay, I'll bite. Death to Smoochy is actually very genuine and ingenious in the humor bureau, and is barely dry in the area. Norton is a conversant and professional actor while Williams becomes funny sometimes. With these two on the same stage, it makes it all the better. A good comedy from DeVito that shines and excels as one of the most underrated films of the decade.

Watching a rhino-horned medieval maiden singing opera on ice isn't for everyone, but I appreciate the weirdness. So for me, it's problems aren't that it's too weird, or too over the top, but I think i'ts simply too long: the beginning is very strong, the middle goes soggy at about the one hour mark, and the ending mostly works but is also too long. So not as good as it could have been, but not the train wreck I expected.

I loved this movie on the first watch, but must have been in a weird mood because neither of the 2 subsequent times was it very watchable. 65 stars is the average of 3 viewings. "Kidding" took this sort of vibe and executed it better, imo. But Norton is tragic and beautiful.

Though largely maligned by critics upon its release, this is by far the best of DeVito’s misanthropic comedies. The premise is brilliant and the dialogue sharp, with a talented ensemble cast bringing a host of colourful characters to life in a pantomime world of showbiz nastiness.

A garish black comedy with a weird amount of heart. I'm not sure DeVito/Resnick could decide between mocking Sheldon for his squeaky-clean choir boy personality and admiring him for it all the same, but that's not necessarily a flaw. It's a lot easier to buy Norton when any ostensible edges have been totally sanded down, and Williams is a lot of fun as an unhinged nut. Not an unqualified success, but certainly unique.

After reading Thomas Pynchon's "essay" on Death to Smoochy and Jon Stewart (Essay: http://www.themodernword.com/pynchon/pynchon_essays_dailyshow.html) I decided to give it a shot. I know, I could be watching better movies, but when Edward Norton comes out in a fuchsia colored Rhino suit singing to a group of children "My Stepdad's not mean, he's just adjusting", I laughed pretty hard, and realized I couldn't kid myself: this movie is pretty damn funny. Not always, but it has its moments.

A healthy dose of black humor that could have been better if it had had the (cock and) balls to cross line a few more times than it actually did. Unfortunately, a lot of the jokes seemed like they were toned down for younger viewers...when it was obvious that's not who the movie was made for.

The concept has potential and the movie has some strong ideas, but it flubs the execution. None of the performances are particularly bad, but tonally the movie is all over the place and a lot of it just comes off feeling... awkward. It's the kind of movie that seems like it would have been a lot of fun to make, but isn't much fun to watch.

A good cast whose performances grow on you throughout, Norton deserves a mention but it's Williams who steals the show, his embittered former entertainer consistently providing the biggest laughs. Certainly not perfect (the romance could have been left out, the writing more polished) but amusing and different enough to warrant your time. Manages to retain the overall sweetness of its subject matter too, even while making plenty of digs at its expense.

Not nearly as bad as I was lead to believe it would be. In fact, I actually enjoyed most of it. However, the tone was all over the map. As is usually the case when there are many opposing forces pulling something strongly in many different directions at once, the end result is that nothing really goes anywhere at all. Or you go ice skating? Death to Smoochy was many things, but was ultimately a middling as a movie.

This was supposed to be a madcap satirical look at the entertainment biz but it just falls flat. The ensemble cast was meant to be interesting but it's annoying instead because it seems like every performance was a blunt instrument hitting you over the head screaming "hey it's supposed to be so bad it's good, don't you get it??"
