Akiva? Akiva Goldsman? Hey, it's Paul Anderson. No, no. The other one. Yeah, the Resident Evil things. Hey, I'm doing a remake and I was wondering if there was any way you could help me find the absolute best thing from Death Race 2000 so I can completely remove it like you did with I Am Legend. I want it competently made and somewhat entertaining, but I want all the meaning stripped from the story.

Well I can't deny that it's got some cool cars and explosions, which are even cooler when they're combined. The film has a soundtrack that actually suites the material of the film but good Lord the rest of the film is sheer garbage like only Paul W.S. Anderson can do. Jason Statham has been in a relentless amount of seriously garbage action films and I hope he's in something decent soon.

A potential PWSA Fast & Furious car porn -- with Tyrese in, it's the least you would expect --, but this actually feels like his Bourne film instead -- Joan does a Bourne nemesis villain, but she's not to blame. For a steampunk prison/race film, it looks maybe too bleak and shaky and the PPV, real-time TV editing seems to get in the way of the director's usual visual flair. At least Statham gets to drive around with his all-too-serious-daddy persona killing dudes to get his baby back.

At the very least, Jason Statham is a consistent actor. You know what you're going to get from him, and as such he doesn't disappoint. That doesn't make this movie any good, however. It's trashy and fun in places but mostly it's like a comic book without any words in it. Statham's monologue at the end almost made me laugh out loud it was so terrible. It was 2 hours of diversion.

If you're looking for some death, plus some race, then this one definitely delivers. Lacks the social commentary of the original, but once the bullets started flyin' I was surprised by how enjoyable it all was. Definitely stupid and superficial, but I could not look away... Delivering deftly upon the unoriginal concept, W.S. really surprises with this. Getting the B-movie slockyness just right while spricing things up with a few good character moments and dashes of - God help us - pretty effective satire, he manages to keep everything marvelously fun. In the end it's all about attitude, so hats off to Statham, seemingly the only guy left who still gets away with oldschool roles. With this and 'The Bank Job', he toplines two of the most entertaining movies of 2008.

Straight-up shot of action trash adrenaline pulled off with more style and bonhomie than expected from Anderson; expect no surprises here, but a fun cast seeming to enjoy themselves, and some absurdly over-the-top car wrecks (and gleefully blood-thirsty violence) makes this a minor winner, and further cements Statham as, if not this generation’s Schwarzenegger, then definitely a Norris. Try not to weep for a wasted Allen (though “shitting on the sidewalk” is a hilarious, if puzzling, insult).

Country race that breaks all of the traditional rules of the road. The time is the not-so-distant future, and as America's prisons begin overflowing with violent criminals, the powers that be devise a grisly game that will free up space in the cells and entertain the masses at the same time. Jensen Ames (Statham) is a three-time speedway champion with a dark past.

Death Race is a mindless but harmless action film that's tolerable to watch once. We've seen everything here before and ultimately it all boils down to style over substance. The plot is wafer thin to say the least but all of the car chases are harmless fun I suppose. This film certainly doesn't hold back with the violence though. Jason Statham is his usual self and the script is woeful. The original wasn't anything special either to be fare. But this remake of sorts is forgettable.

It probably wasn't as bad as I was expecting actually. One of the biggest reasons I wanted to watch this at all was the great Ian McShane, and he was certainly the best actor in the whole thing. The dialogue didn't help any of the actors though. Statham was the same character he is in all his films. I wish they had a better actress playing the warden, as that could've been a better character. It's not a terrible concept, just not executed with any flair here.

I really like Jason Statham as an action movie star. He does a good dead-pan humor and he makes his action scenes seem really believable. The rest of the cast was wisely chosen, as well. Joan Allen, amazing as always, plays a heartless bitch that the audience loves to hate. Tyrese Gibson and Ian McShane also add to the relatability of the cast. I had a good time with Death Race, even though I have never seen the original. I do love near future Sci-Fi and this movie fits into that genre well.

Death Race is not a terribly bad movie, but it's not as much fun as it should have been. Watching the race -- the film's supposed high point -- gets boring after a while, as there is only so much shooting and banging that one can take before you realize that you're never going to see anything different. It's relentless, too, ensuring that you don't get a chance to breathe, or think. It can be enjoyed, I suppose, but I grew tired fairly early on.

A pretty much straightforward film that reminds me of Twisted Metal. I'm no big fan of action movies but I can stomach Jason Statham as he usually brings something to his movies. Didn't have the tension that this movie should have had, but the story was simple and sometimes that is what works best. The acting wasn't too bad and lots of explosions and violent death scenes really kept me interested until towards the end, which I thought got kind of stupid. Not a bad waste of time though.

However, everything else about this film is just abysmal. Never mind they took a schlocky awesome grindhouse classic and made it into shitty mainstream action flick, but the plot makes no goddamn sense.
