It's not often that a movie reaches the kind of jewelline perfection achieved by this gem. What is a basically charming story achieves enough emotional depth via its quirky devices to be genuinely moving. If all this wasn't enough, there are wonderful acting performances: of these, Sam Neill is glorious as the eponyous Dean while Peter O'Toole produces something worthy of the highest levels of praise for true artistry.

Charming, whimsical fantasy possibly lays it on a bit thick at times, and can't quite support its substantial emotional kick at the denouement, but when the storytellers include a winsome Neill, and a wonderfully irascible O'Toole, it's difficult to complain.

Wonderful life-affirming film about a father coming to terms with the death of his son. Full of oddball detail and wry humour, with terrific performances from all involved.

Most amusing.

This is a fantastic period piece that takes the "shaggy dog" storyline concept and turns it on its head. The acting is superb and the story is very engaging. It's film is such a fascinating story to watch that you fail to notice the lack of sex, action or swearing.
