Makes you sad to see the state of the press nowadays.

Humphrey Bogart well at home doing the fearless newspaper editor role, in a world of questionable money and connections threatening the paper he runs. Combines the reporter drama with a murder investigation being the key to bringing it's message of good honest journalism being crucial in a world full of money men wanting to hide the truth. Get's strong support from Ethel Barrymore and Kim Hunter, along with many other characters doing their bit to deliver a captivating story.

Box Versátil Jornalismo no Cinema

This film from the 50's already paints a bleak future facing the newspaper business, with Bogart's newspaper at risk of being sold off and shut down. But the way it presents the power of the press is so idealistic that I found it quite depressing to watch in the present day, even moreso than other media films like All the President's Men or Network.

The performances are good, and enjoyable, there's a wide and varied cast and they all get some nice moments. The story is a nice mix of frustration and hope and outside a few cheesy moments hits all its beats quite well. Underlying that story is a nice ode to the value of newspapers that ties well to the struggles of the characters. But it's lacking that extra something. I liked it a lot, but I couldn't help but notice all the ways it could have been better.

Delightful entertainment. Maybe seems a bit simple nowadays, but that does not remove it's charms.
