The chilling story of identical twin gynecologists, suave Elliot and sensitive Beverly, bipolar sides of one personality, who share the same practice, the same apartment, the same women. Jeremy Irons' tour-de-force performance (as both twins) raises disturbing questions about the nature of personal identity. (Criterion Collection)

I've never been at a movie before where everyone in the audience, both male and female, crossed their legs at the exact same moment, minus the time I watched a drag queen hosted presentation of Basic Instinct. The less said about that the better.

Queasy, unsettling psychodrama is fatally lacking true insight into "The Mantle Twins" instead being content to shove its audience's collective face into an escalatingly perverse and ugly, self-destructive situation, further compunded by a cold and antiseptic approach which dulls what I assume is odd stabs at dark comedy. Counterbalancing this is Irons' magnificent, career-best performance as both men - he makes the film worth seeing, and indeed involving, for the most part.

It's not much of a horror film, more of a drama that's kind of fucked up. Irons is truly incredible in this, even in isolation either of his performances would be worthy of praise and admiration, especially as Beverly. Dead Ringers surprisingly ends up being one of the most striking/affecting portrayals of addiction you're likely to see.

As much as I appreciate the methodical pacing and the career-pinnacle performance from Jeremy Irons, the film doesn't do enough at late turning points to convince us that this is the most believable direction it could go. While I still liked the quiet ending, the film definitely should've worked harder to make it satisfying rather than just neat.

Yes, Jeremy Irons puts on a performance (two performances?) worthy of a trifurcated uterus...but that didn't help alleviate the boredom felt while I waited and waited for some Cronenberg-esque vagina-themed creature to pop out of the walls. The imagery is simply too straightforward (obvious comparisons to the Siamese twins) to provoke any other thoughts than 'hey, these guys are like Siamese twins.'

Dead Ringers is definitely disturbing, and endlessly interesting to ponder and discuss, but it's not an easy watch by any means. There are more than a few moments that will make you uncomfortable to the point of leaning away from the screen, as if to distance yourself from the events occurring. Irons is truly excellent in the double roles, and the movie's descent into psychosis is really gripping.

Plays as grotesque High Art - like Eakins' paintings of autopsy classes. Or if Bertolucci directed a snuff film. Importantly, it shows that behind Cronenberg's typical anxiety over the body and its functions lies a deep-seeded moral ambivalence and psychological malaise: in a very literal way, it gets under your skin, because it's attracted to the evil that has been festering there, in us, all along. The last shot is one of cinema's greatest.

Not Cronenberg's finest... not by a long shot. Ladies, don't watch this cringe-worthy stuff with your vaginas in tact; I should've left mine hanging on the towel rack overnight. Very hostile towards women, which disappointed me as a Cronenberg fan.

Jesus Christ. Shit. What the fuck. This film's descent is so gradual, and eventually so extreme, that it requires some effort to process, or even to stomach, these appalling and terrible exhibitions. The brutalist architecture and mise-en-scene is off-putting, alien, revolting: a perfect habitat for this pair of co-dependent sociopaths. Jeremy Irons deserves every ounce of praise he's received for this performance (these performances).

Tonally similar to Crash in its very moody, clinical, and more humorless approach as far as Cronenberg movies are concerned. Stylistically it is absolutely masterful, with typically flawless direction and Irons is absolutely ridiculous, perhaps being only slightly overshadowed by himself. It's a thoroughly inspiring suspense/horror but I found it too dementedly heavy-handed to rank it with my favorite Cronenberg films.

Women aren't treated too kindly in this film, but I don't believe Cronenberg is a misogynist. To be fair, the male twins both brilliantly portrayed by Jeremy Irons are rather repulsive man-creatures, and I tend to think this film is simply a dissection of sexuality and identity (or lack thereof), probing a bit of grotesque humanity. It is also one of Cronenberg's best-looking films, with lots of vibrant red and blue hues. It feels as cold and viscerally incisive as a surgeon's instruments.

Problem #1: it doesn't feel like horror w/ drama elements, but vice versa - esp sluggish 1st hour #2: Presumably Cronenberg wants us to not always be able to tell the twins apart, but it's just annoying bc we'll eventually find out in a few minutes #3: the ways Cronenberg illustrates that the twins can't truly separate from one another is absurd in this otherwise realistic context especially when the usually in-control Elliot seemingly chooses to spiral out of control simply b/c his brother has.

Disturbing and effective psychological thriller. I can't complain TOO much about Dustin Hoffman winning the Academy Award for Rain Man this year--that was also great--but the fact that Irons wasn't even NOMINATED for Best Actor for this virtuoso performance is a total crime. Even when the twins are at their most similar, subtle differences allow us to recognize them instantly, even with no context. Of course, the more extreme is well acted, but I think the subtle aspects are even more impressive

Not as sinister as it tries to be. Great moments that touch on a sexual psychosis as we see the emotionally distraught twin spiral downwards. The mutilation is expressive and interestingly raises some sort of demonic aura within our human female's body. Just not as great as I imagined all together.

Disturbing. Irons plays the twins with subtlety, to the point where sometimes you think you know who's who and others you have no idea at all. Cronenberg's grotesque visions seeps in directly in several scenes, but the ominous nature of the whole is what's really disturbing. I particularly like how uncomfortable some of the men get when discussing the vagina in a non-sexual manner. The red scrubs also give a particular cult feel to the idea of restoring fertility.

Trebles all round! Cronenberg makes me feel sympathetic, sad, almost melancholic at times watching the deterioration of Iron's character(s?) but also disgusted, shocked, scared, and creeped out. The bodyhorror here is toned down, an indication of things to come later in Cronenberg's career as he starts playing around with the psychology of the characters and the audience in a much more subtle manner. The cool blue and grey tones of the film go well with the blending of real and surreal.

Calmly paced, stoic descent into another Cronenberg creation. Irons splits himself in two & where one goes the other must follow. Poetic touch having their careers and perhaps obsession "We always intended to move into research" revolve around the place the twins first met. Introduce a new uterus, a mutant one. This begins the slow separation process aided by a damning cocktail of medical sedatives, jealousy & professional collapse.

Dead Ringers is a fantastic film. What's it about? Twin gynecologists who swap places with one another in order to have sex with their patients, all while becoming addicted to any number of drugs and inventing tools for their practice that would be considered torture if they were ever used. If that doesn't turn you off the film, you'll probably appreciate it. Fascinating. Partly about dependency on drugs perhaps, or dependency on a facade to get through life, but mostly about codependency. The relationship between Elliot and Bev is portrayed impeccably by Jeremy Irons in both roles. It really is a masterful performance, and watching the two share the screen is endlessly entrancing. In a way, this wondrous story of brotherhood is also another powerful statement on human body by Cronenberg. They are not only obsessed with the women trey treat -- Bev is sentimental, has feelings for a patient but also thinks there are full of mutant vaginas out there; Elly is icy, clinical, the man that makes speeches --, but with their own bodies, their condition of identical (but separated) persons, that were born, live -- and will eventually die together.

An unsettling, psychologically-complex masterpiece. Cronenberg's familiar fusion of psychology and body horror is at its best here, with the protagonists' mental states and our perceptions of them becoming increasingly complex and confused. You haven't lived until you've watched this with your friend who happens to be a twin. The unsettling tone is taken to a whole new level. It's ultimately a very effective exercise in mood; love is the primary drive of everything the Mantle twins do, but they express it in such twisted fashion like it's the only way that they can. "Dead Ringers" is an oddity -it relies on an admittedly intriguing gimmick and it manages to be weirdly compelling if relatively uninvolving. Irons is exceptional in a dual role and Cronenberg's direction is sharp, but those advantages don't fully secure the film's impact on an emotional as well as intellectual level. Sure, it's an interesting ride and occasionally a pretty funny one and the ending is as enigmatic as it's beautifully made. But it may just be weird for the sake of weird anyway.

Despite his trademark fondness for all the grisly ways that flesh can be malformed and brutalized, David Cronenberg's true genius lies in exploring the corresponding frailty of the human psyche, a talent that may be at its apogee in this splendidly unpleasant thriller. It's the threat of violence more than its bloody execution that inspires the chills, allowing more narrative room to explore the mental mayhem his characters endure. In this effort, he has a marvelous partner in Jeremy Irons.
