Deeply gripping and idealogically disturbing, Dead Man's Shoes is a film that remains in the memory for a long time after the initial viewing. Set in the equally surreal and picturesque Derbyshire countryside it tells a fresh story of sorrow and revenge among a troubled community, done with obviously intimate understanding of the environment from director Shane Meadows. Considine plays the role well and although occasionally scenes may seem a little slapdash, the rest have been done excellently.

Lots to enjoy here, in particular Considine's menacing, efficient performance. It's grim, brutal, bleak and grounded, but with the odd splash of dark humour and surrealism that stop it being a grind. My biggest question was why the gangster types were cutting around in an old Citroën 2CV. Madness. Need to see more of Meadows' work.

You'd think it would be a 'Blue Ruin' type of deal, but Shane Meadows has such a love (and eye) for the wretched existences of lower-class England, that you come for the revenge, and stay for the tragedy of it all.

Even though it's a bit messy at times, the flashback structure works well, and the scenes with the gentle, sympathetic Hurstfield towards the end of the film provide a nice counterweight to Charles Bronson ... Paddy Considine, I mean, who's really good at playing that whole "I'm borderline crazy with rage but sane enough to fuck you up" shebang convincingly.

"I'm not threatening you, mate. It's beyond words." Toes the line between action revenge hero à la Man on Fire or Death Wish and straight up slasher villain like Jason or the Leprechaun. Although, aside from being from across the pond, Paddy doesn't really have much else in common with the Leprechaun.

Thoroughly well-crafted thriller/drama that almost completely avoids melodrama in favour of an omnipresent oppressive feeling - it's like the countryside, paved roads, cramped (ugly) houses etc. all come caving in. It's almost claustrophobic. Meadows structures the movie beautifully, while Considine is a fearsome presence. Standout: The 'drug scene' - veering disturbingly between the poles of realism and fantasy.

It's a familiar tale, but Meadows brings a lot of nuances, especially to the antagonists, which elevates it quite a bit. I felt the ending was somewhat (and comparatively) heavy handed, with too much unnecessary dialogue, but all in all a nice, gritty stroll through the shittier part of the british countryside.

Dark, disturbing and well structured tale from post Iraq-war UK. Strikes me as a companion piece to "Kill List" in the way that it comments on the troubles of veterans whilst simultaneously using them to tell a completely different albeit equally grim story. Paddy Considine is great and Shane Meadows balances character sympathy elegantly for maximum emotional impact.

Typically for a Shane Meadows film it's gripping and instantly gets right down to business: character and story. Any pretentiously artful auteur shots are few and far between. Everyone's acting seems effortless in the naturalistic ad-libbed scenes which form the basis of a fast-moving, dynamic and well-structured story. Although many amateur moments give away the fact that this is one of his earlier films, they don't take away from its underlying strength. Paddy Considine is quietly impressive.

A great revenge thriller made fantastic by Paddy Considine, what a performance! Toby Kebbell was great too. The atmosphere set by Meadows in this is fantastic, the little sleepy midlands town is a great setting for some really disturbing scenes. It's a claustrophobic, surreal thriller but sprinklings of dark humour and amazing performances. One of the best british films I've ever seen.

There are a few parts that probably didn't receive the same amount of care as the rest of the film, but the rest of the film is for the most part a tonally rich, clever, and humane take on the slasher.

It seems to me that one element of this movie that isn't mentioned enough is its sense of humour. Dead Man's Shoes - while a gripping thriller and drama - is the blackest of black comedy. The ineptitude of the antagonists is keystone cops stuff and their grisly ends are frequently hilarious. The decision to have a gang of hardened drug dealers piling into that car was truly inspired.

A very different revenge flick. It stirred mixed feelings in me. It does get gratuitous, and a bit too 'cool' for its own good, kind of kid stuff, and the basic premise is hackneyed indeed. But then it's extremely well-made, Paddy Considine's performance is *the stuff of legend*, the non-actors are great, and the ending sheds a whole new light on the otherwise familiar material. Shane Meadows has made better films, but I must say this is good too.

I had high hopes for this one and was definitely a little disappointed. For me, the twist was obvious 10 minutes, and without that to come as a surprise, the narrative is too simple and straightforward for its own good. I'm a huge fan of Considine, and he's great in his role, but the filmmaking on display did not impress, especially in the numerous flashbacks.

Dead Man's Shoes is a refreshingly original revenge thriller from Shane Meadows and it's one of my favourite British films ever made. Paddy Considine is a revelation and he gives a powerhouse performance. As does Tony Kebbell. This is certainly one of the most compelling, surreal, disturbing, claustrophobic & atmospheric films I've ever experienced. And whilst this is a tough and mean spirited watch, the horror and dread of this story is handled and delivered expertly with dashes of dark humour.

Some parts of this are intriguing and brilliant, but the mixture of superb local detail, the portrayal of a the grim underbelly of rural life doesn't, for me, sit easily with the more traditional execution of a revenge thriller, with the suspension of reality that's required. Maybe it was all meant to hang together to add richness, but I found it disappointed ultimately. Some brilliant, detailed, acting performances, however.

A deeply unsettling film, the moments of black comedy jarring with the oppressive tension so that you really don't know what to expect next. Gritty, emotionally powerful, raw and what British Films should be made of. With an almost frightening reality to it, none of the cast could be faulted. The casual, minimal tone of the whole movie gives it a sort of surreal quality. Not even 90 minutes long, so it definitely doesn't overstay it's welcome. The plot twist isn't too dramatic or overdone, it's just right. The last half hour of the film is worth the score alone, and the overdose scene was VERY well done. Fantastic acting. My only real gripe is with the DVD itself, as there were no english subtitles, as I couldn't understand what the hell what was being said about 70% of the time.

This was some rough, rough stuff. Maltreatment of disabled people is something I cannot really stomach; I think that this is a very common feeling so the motivation of the main character grabs you easily (although maybe not his methods). The sense of terror and anticipation was masterfully handled with intertwining moments of serenity and rural scenery. The ending was a tad bit too poetic for my taste, but that was artists' discretion; so I cannot hold it up against them.

Enjoyable the first time, a very dark revenge thriller punctuated with sharp shots of comedy and pathos, but on second viewing, knowing the plot trajectory, it becomes very easy to see how paper-thin the characterisation is, and how much of the film seems to offer a brand of social realism which has more in common with Eastenders than any actual form of existence.

It would've been more satisfying for us if the film revealed the full extent of wrongdoing of which our avenging anti-hero's victims are guilty before seeing their brutal comeuppance, but the bleak naturalism of its Northern English atmosphere and eerily moving performances by Considine, Stretch and Kebbell leave resonance once the express 86 minutes are up.

A simpleminded young man is terrorized by a group of sadistic thugs and a vicious prank sets the stage for bloody revenge. Very confusing as the young man is a companion to his older brother after he returns from the military. This shows just how vulnerable people can be, even for hardened criminals. He exploits their weaknesses and gains the upper hand to take them down. But, the story is told in a somewhat jumbled and convoluted way and the ending really sucked.
