Dead Again

Suspense/Thriller
1h 47m
Mike Church (Branagh) is an L.A. gumshoe with a knack for tossing off wisecracks and tracking down missing persons. But Church doesn't have a clue when he's hired to help a beautiful amnesia victim (Thompson) tormented by bloodcurdling nightmares. Then an eccentric antiques dealer and hypnotist (Derek Jacobi) leads Church to a startling discovery: The source of the nightmares may lie in a past-life connection to Margaret Strauss, a world-famous pianist allegedly murdered by her composer-husband Roman... in 1948. A fantastic modern film noir with a lot of Hitchcockian influences and a surprising amount of comedy. The art direction has a definite surrealist feel to it too. Branagh, Thompson and Jacobi are absolutely fantastic in this - I still can't get over how perfect Branagh's American accent was. I think the only thing preventing me from giving this a full 100 is that Grace's hair is absolutely atrocious, even for a supposed eccentric artist.

A really good thriller with a twist. The past-life element worked out better then one might think and it was exciting to the very end.

This movie will screw with your head. I really enjoyed the chemistry between Branagh and Thompson is outstanding. This is one of the best film noir films of the last 20 years. The last five minutes are fantastic.

Not sure how or why I managed to finish this film. I think because it became an exercise in patience. Also to see if it would improve and would be something other than 1hr 48min of silliness.

It is surprising that this premise works, but it is testament to Branagh's direction and the the cast's enthusiasm. Silly but effective.

A movie with Hitchcockian influence all over it, and although the conclusion isn't the most satisfying, the setup, acting and directing are all fantastic for the most part. It's decidedly old school in its tone and technique which might feel a bit odd for a film made in 1991, but when it emulates its influences so well there's no reason to nitpick at it. Recommended for Hitchcock, Welles and mystery/suspense film lovers.

The plot seems to depend on the fact that two of the characters are reincarnated former lovers. This is handled without apparent irony, meanwhile there are several slapstick or corny comedy sequences that seemed out of place. Interesting movie, but overall I was not particularly impressed.

Cant believe this turned a profit at the box office, it smacks of a straight to VHS production to me. It screams out TV Movie in fact. I can imagine it on in the afternoon in between an episode of Quincy and perhaps a Columbo.

As a director, Branagh makes smart, gritty choices that allow for us to stretch our minds while making us laugh all the while at smart, genuinely witty humor.

I wasn't really digging the idea from the get go, and the way it turns out ends up pretty flat, the leads verge on the annoying, but Williams and Garcia put out some straightforward, if not lukewarm performances. Give it a miss if you have a choice, but bare in mind there's a reason no one remembers it.

The whole premise is kind of silly but forgivable since it is so well made and both leads are engaging.

This was actually a pretty decent movie with a little twist at the end. I don't know about multiple viewings, but I liked it when I saw it.

Although this movie has a kick-ass title, Dead Again (1991) is pretty dull for at least 50% of the run-time. With Kenneth Branagh directing, at least the acting is pretty damn good. Branagh and Emma Thompson both do pretty good American accents, and Robin Williams and Wayne Knight (better none as Newman on Seinfeld) fit their roles pretty well. Not good, not bad.

You really can't go wrong with a stylish thriller starring Kenneth Branagh, Derek Jacobi & Emma Thompson. Very Hitchcockian.

It's fun to see Branagh playing an American, but this movie is just too chicky and too silly. A good example of how stage-trained actors and directors often make absolute fools of themselves when they attempt to make a movie
