Well-structured and well-shot, but sparse and shallow. The narration is cheesy at times and the whole thing has an almost cynical attitude. This is nothing special but is interesting to see if you're a Kubrick fan/completist.

As a short look at boxing it works even if it's nothing spectacular.

Great use of stark, but dynamic cinematography, and a great feel for tension and energy in the editing. No surprise that this short and slight narrative with its exaggerated narration would mainly be a showcase of Kubrick's formal sensitivity.

Stanley Kubrick makes a sweet little boxing film. One of two shorts he did in his first year making films. Intense and and with a strong build-up for the short amount of time it lasted. While nothing too original, it's a solid one. Better than the Flying Padre.

An interesting look at a fighter's day before a fight. It's done with a grim mater of fact narration and no dialogue,

Pretty interesting. Nice short documentary, but the annoying fades between shots bring down the experience.

Nothing mind-blowing but essential viewing for any Kubrick geek like myself. That worm's-eye shot from both fighters was pretty sweet.

Tense, well defined and fantastically shot little sports doc.

A cute short doc made by Kubrick. Amusing in its novelty.

For a directing debut, Day of the Fight is surprisingly short of any amateurishness. It's not terribly interesting, which should be no surprise as it's generally forgotten, but for the short documentary it is it couldn't be done much better. The acting is perfectly natural, there are many great shots, and the narrative uses clever metaphors to convey the intensity of the life of a boxer. The dark lighting gives the short a sort of film noir atmosphere.

Does a pretty good job at conveying the tension, intensity and absurdity of the boxer's life. Weakest aspect is the music.

a very competent promotional documentary about a subject almost entirely without interest. stylistically it's almost a preview of the killing. overall better than expected.

Naive, but well-shot doc on the life of a fighter waiting for just another fight -- but facing it as if it was the first. It's the first time I saw Kubrick interested in the tensions provided by interiors.

As a boxing fan it appeals to me. It's not a mind-blowing short, but it's solidly made.

Fairly standard. It sets up Kubrick's auteur theme.

It shows the pre-fight ritual of an Irish boxer. An interesting start of Kubrick.

Annoyingly pretentious, heavy-handed narration. Furthermore, the visuals (the fighter's expressions mainly) seldom seemed to have anything to do with all that gloom-and-doom talk. We certainly learned that much of a boxer's life is spent waiting...and waiting...and waiting. Best part was the fight itself--tautly etched, with some cool camera angles (and at last no Douglas Edwards...although he regretably couldn't resist returning for one last-minute Jack-Londonesque wrapup).

26 Ocak 08 & Kubrick'in ilk kisa filmi "Flying Padre" 'den daha uzun ve daha basarili.iki kisa filmde, ayni stilde -profil, belgesel- olsada, "Day of the Fight" icerik bakimdan daha zengin.ilginc bir calisma ve o doneme gore de "iyi" sayilabilecek bir kisa film.

More interesting for its context than its subject. It looks great, very much resembling Kubrick's still photography from around that time.
