I really wanted to like this movie, but it was simply boring. Most of it is concert footage and will depend on whether you like the songs and the performances. But outside the concert, the movie was very disapointing - not very funny, not very interesting.

85% Music, 15% Dave I'd only recommed this for fans of the music, his parts in the movie are very limited, and for the most part, too serious. I wanted to see Dave the comedian, I could care less about Dave the humanitarian.

I like the performances by Common and Mos Def and Talib Kwali, but the movie itself is kinda stupid. I wish he never left Comedy central. I'm Rick James Expletive!!!

Like a 21st century WOODSTOCK, the footage cuts between the performers, backstage banter, the organization of the event and interesting characters. The looseness of the editing lends to the party atmosphere. All the music is really good but I was most pleased with the electrifying Dead Prez. What the film could have used is a little more Chappelle. I had hoped he would be a bit more present, but what we would do see and hear of him is gold, a naturally funny, easy-going and warm-hearted guy.

One of the better concert films I've seen. It's easy to have fun watching someone like Chappelle, who seems perpetually happy and hilarious throughout the film. It would be easy to write this off as pro-Dave propaganda, as it does seem to be an effort to resurrect Chappelle after he backed out on more seasons of the show -- but I can't do it. It's just too much fun, and has such a good energy that it's tough to be cynical about it. The music is damn good, too.

Great concert with some of modern hip-hop's brightest and generally most underrated artists. Chappelle is hillarious as always.

A pretty standard concert film. It doesn't exactly show off the talents of either Chappelle or Gondry, but if you enjoy the musical acts involved like I do you'll enjoy watching their performances.

Not really much to review, as it isnt a stand-up by Chappelle, nor is it a series of skits like his show. Instead, we pretty much follow Dave around Brooklyn as he prepares a block party (though there are also some scenes of him outside of NY too). It's funny, but not overly so; the real treat here are the live performances. Dead Prez (Turn Off The Radio & It's Bigger Than Hip Hop), Mos Def (Umi Says), The Roots w Big Daddy Kane and the reunited Fugees.

MTV-style visuals would have been just the thing for this movie. Instead, we end up having to look at cheesy video footage transferred to film, which 99% of the time (like here) looks like shit. I walked out of this dull-ass piece of crudulence at the point where Chappelle tells a racist joke (it's against white people, so of course it's OK)

I like a lot of the music and Dave Chappelle is a cool mother fucker but this movie was just good, not great. Gondry has done better.

Doesn't really ever feel like a film. The music is good, Dave is funny, but doesn't come together in any way to be more than the sum of its parts.

If I didn't already like hip-hop, I would have started after watching this concert film. Music is nice, but it's just like any recorded concert. Chappelle does his thing (both comedy and social issues), but mostly Gondry shows people and places around the concert venue. Some of these people are very interesting (elderly hippie couple), but most of them don't have much to say. A fun way to spend 100 minutes, especially if you have some weed and like-minded friends around.

a small window into the culture of hip-hop and comedy in the mid-2000s, bouncing between the lead-up and show of the titular Block Party. tidbits about race, music, the nature of humor, and the inner city are sprinkled throughout, and the outsider's-eye of Gondry sticks close by with a curiosity and fixation that keep us interested in the words of a high school marching band player as much as Lauryn Hill.

Competently filmed record of the titular event will no doubt appeal relative to your inherent interest in the music acts; unlike the great concert docos, little time is given to build genuine atmosphere, and the acts themselves are filmed fairly flatly, making you wonder why an esteemed film-maker like Gondry was recruited for this. Chappelle himself is only in it sporadically, devoting most of the film to the concert itself, which never gets above mellow stoned energy.

There are a few laughs to be had, but the music doesn't connect with me, so that is a major hinderance to the success of the movie.

Here is a film that shows off two things that I love about Dave Chappelle: his ability to be funny under any circumstances and his charming love for his fans. He must have worked hard to organize such a great musical event, and I think he is owed some credit for that!

I love Dave, but am not a big fan of the musical acts he features here - but that's all subjective. Dave puts on a hell of a show, and every minute Dave is on screen is full of laughs.

Ultimately disappointing as the previews make it seem more about Chappelle's humour when in reality it is mostly a music concert. While the tunes are good, I felt a little mislead. Still, enjoyable if you know what you're in for.

One of the better concert films in recent memory. It doesn't require the viewer to be a huge fan of Dave Chappelle or the musical acts or even hip-hop to fully enjoy it. Plenty for everyone here. Good music, good people, good jokes, great movie.
