I really admire what Dash is trying to do here - plotless, nonlinear, filled with attempts at poetic imagery. Unfortunately, it feels mostly just that: attempts. She doesn't really have the cinematic "power" so to speak to make this completely work. There's a lot here about the differences between the native "pagan" spirituality and mainstream Christianity, but both are drawn with such broad strokes. This works against the film's final conclusion: that there is space to occupy between the two.

This movie is pretty confusing. I've never liked Dash, she seems to give better interviews then make better movies. The ending is pretty good but everything up to that is jarring and annoying.

Gained more esteem than deserved because of the career Dash should have and the racist apparatus that keeps artists like her down. Don't think it's as revolutionary as it's made out to be. It's interesting but lacks the visual flair I think it needs. I was feeling a bit bored at times.

I'd never question the importance of this when it comes to the history and development of African American filmmaking. However, for me, it is a tiresome film - indeed tedious - because every moment is presented as poignant when that's not the case. The constant slo-motion and intrusive music (that damn synthesiser!) is a big part of the problem. All the characters are annoying. Admittedly it does look good, but even that's derivative of Terrence Malick and Peter Weir.

Undeniably well done, it's beautiful and wrestles with some interesting themes about tradition and moving into the future, but it ultimately just didn't hold my attention all that well. The plot was too loose for me. If you watch movies to be immersed in cultures or with people who are totally unlike you are used to, this will probably be great for you, but as a piece of entertainment it didn't do a ton for me. It feels like it's trying to do many things that just don't totally come together.

A nice mix between a tone poem and slice-of-life picture. The non-linear storytelling does present a good dreamlike vibe but at the expense of the characters at times, while the visuals are excellent. Generally though I found it better as a look at a society I knew nothing about than as a narrative feature.

BlurayRip RARBG.

Slow and poetic - this is a beautiful watch with stunning cinematography and portrays complex family relations, across the generations.

The film's setting is intriguing but the movie shows us little of how this society actually functions and instead gives us a bunch of rather pointless scenes that don't go anywhere or build towards anything in an attempt to convey the differences between traditional and American lifestyles. This is conveyed rather poorly and is presented in broad strokes, and the presentation of the plot is just boring which isn't helped by the fact its attempts at poetic writing comes across as really lame.

Well acted but rather dull. The favorite movie of a film professor I once had - dissenting opinions were considered invalid, so I felt forced to find the brilliance. Nice use of editing to tell the story. I was told its complete descent into metaphor should have left me in awe... it just left me shrugging my shoulders. I guess I'm not a first class film snob.

A low-budget triumph, which took the determined, talented director 10 years to complete.

The setting is beautiful, but the film itself goes nowhere. I was so bored by the end of this film that it was painful to sit through it, and I don't get bored easily.
