France in the late 1600s, the son of a widowed lord is kidnapped by gypsies, who carve a permanent grin on the child's face. When the deformed boy grows up, he falls in love with a blind girl named Dea, and joins a touring company as a performer. Calling himself Gwynplaine, he develops an act in which he reveals his hideous face to the crowds for money. A sexually perverse, seductive socialite named Josiane becomes attracted to him and seeks to possess him.

The Man Who Laughs (1928) is a film I hold near and dear to me heart. It's been my face for well over a decade, as I stole the image of it for my avatar. So it was with excitement I discovered that there was a earlier adaptation of the story available. This one stars Franz Höbling as Gwynplaine, the one with the grotesque smile. However, his smile is not so grotesque. He just has a moderately bigger mouth than others, so it's not nearly the effect of Conrad Veidt's "joker".
