Das Schweigen am Starnbergersee

Das Schweigen am Starnbergersee

1920
Drama, Biography
This is a very early feature by Rolf Raffé concerning the supposedly "mad" King of Bavaria, Ludwig II, probably the first feature film concerning the life of that King. In the piece, which is for the most part a straightforwards historical biopic from the DW Griffith school of narrative filmmaking, Ludwig is portrayed as an Idealist who cannot fit into the world of his contemporaries.

This film version by Rolf Raffé of the life of King "Crazy Lou" can hardly be called great film making. Half-ambitious by 1920 standards perhaps, or perhaps not, doing a long costume drama telling about the important events in Ludwig II's infamous existence. The acting, costumes and staging looks like it was done by a local amateur theater/re-enactment group and really doesn't make for a very good experience.
