Jennifer Connelly is in this. Who cares what the movie is about?

A single mother moves into a house that has a DARK secret. This is a slow - some would say depressing - horror allegory. There's good acting and it comes to a solid start, but then it struggles hard to engage, flirting with a lot of ideas, like it's teasing you, in the end somehow becoming less than the sum of its parts.

Reasonably well crafted horror effort will be burdened by any fresh memories of the superior Japanese original – these memories give the film a warmed-over, second-hand feel which is not really fair to the fine cast (Reilly’s slickly ingratiating salesman is a highlight) and Salles’ direction. Simplifying certain characters and concepts doesn’t always quite pay off; while the denouement and epilogue are clearer here, they are missing the memorably elliptical puzzlement of the original.

Haven't seen the original. I find that the J-horror films lend themselves reasonably well to remakes, but they often lose "something" along the way. I think that was possibly the case here, because it felt a bit bland. The setting was a bit dour, so that probably didn't help. The cast was good, and the story decent, but despite being slightly affecting at points there wasn't really enough going on to make this memorable.

A creepy, underrated film that deserves more notice. Connelly is tremendous as a struggling woman doing everything she can. Superb moments of pain, despair, & terror. I so wanted to give her a big hug. 8-yrs young Gade is wonderful. Speaking of characters, water is one of them. Absolutely dismal; rain, leaking ceiling, puddles. It's always raining, cloudy. Ever live somewhere with a rainy, endless winter? You'll get it.

Jennifer Connelly is admirable. The story is not all that bad. Even the atmosphere is suitable dark. All of the good pieces come together with the script to form something which came out dull for the most part. It can work for a horror movie night, but not much else.

Pretty decent attempt at what it was going for; a rather dark, dingy, grimy feel and look done quite well. The slower pace may put off some people, I think Connelly pulls it off nicely, and the supporting cast is also good especially Postlethwaite in his small role.

Kind if a bait and switch, it's more about a family struggling to deal with the changes and stresses that come with divorce, which naturally aren't helped when ghosts get in the plumbing. If I was looking for scary maybe I would have hated it like a lot of people. Maybe if it wasn't largely derided and dismissed the pleasant surprise wouldn't have kicked the score as high. But I liked it a lot actually.

Could have done without the Okinawan hand drum or the Hello Kitty backpack, which seemed like tired attempts at force-feeding the Western audience some generic Japanese culture. That aside, Dark Water is a moody thriller set in one of the most depressing places on the east coast. It's never scary nor thought-provoking, but at least it has some semblance of focus, which is rare in most modern Japanese horror. And it has Connelly who is still as cute as the day David Bowie stole her baby brother.

Dark Water is a watchable remake of a Japanese horror movie. That alone puts it ahead of most of the pack in the same situation. It's really creepy and has good actors and convincing special effects. It's just never really all that scary. The payoff for most of the imagery shown throughout just doesn't add up to anything. And it ties is central theme together nicely at the end, even if it isn't terribly prevalent or impactful through most of the picture.

Very dark but not as scary as I thought it might be. At least it wasn't full of a bunch of things that are there for the purpose to make you jump. My husband saw the Japanese version and said it was much more eerie. I didn't think this was all to bad but pretty easy to figure out what was going to happen next.

Yet another in the countless J-Horror remakes, this continues their tradition of being crappy. Only this one tries to be a "good" movie, by giving us good cinematography and good actors. Another way the movie tries to be good is by being slow. I am not sure where they decided that slow is good, but it completely ruins the movie. There is a bit of tension building up in the beginning but the movie takes so long to get to the climax that I was really bored by the third act. The music was pret
