Dark Skies can pretty much be summed up by one sequence near the end when the family finally comes to the realization that the ETs only want to probe one of them, so they come up with a fool-proof plan to stick together NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS. The aliens appear not long after, using telekinetic unscrewing technology to break into the house and what is the first thing the father does? Tells the kids to go to their room. THANKS DAD. Protip: Don't put the final "twist" of your movie on the poster.

It might borrow a lot from other, better, movies, but damn if it didn't keep me interested all the way through. Both the well acted family drama and the spooky alien action.

I'm more concerned about the number of people that were watching Sammy's t-shirt being pulled up.

About two years ago, me and my friends wrote a short film about a teenager abducted by aliens. This story was made around the same time I made one of the said friends eat a Dorito and Little Debbie covered slice of pizza in exchange for one of my properties in Monopoly. The short was still a more subtle and mature alien film than Dark Skies.

Standard Spielbergian family-in-crisis nonsense (at one point somebody says something along the lines of "so the only way we can win is if we stick together as a family unit"). Some moments were OK.

There's a nice slow buildup with lots of atmosphere and creepiness going on. Reminded me of both Poltergeist and The X-files. Not sure if there should have been more or less aliens.

An interesting take on the alien abduction scenario. I guess I can kind of see the the tie ins to other movies (though not Paranormal Activity... this has far more in common with Poltergeist), but most movies are at least slightly derivative and I feel that this one runs in a different direction in the end. Creepy and effective.

Impressive how nearly every character is so f-cking annoying, especially the mother and the youngest kid. If you have a choice save yourself some time and ignore this crap.

Creepy small-town chiller that works up a heck of an atmosphere. More successful in early scenes than later: despite the wonderful JK Simmons, the final act relies too heavily on the overtly, rather than potentially, supernatural. The most effective horror is in what you don't see: an age-old rule that this movie abides by for a lot, but not enough, of the running time. Delivers overall, though; Russell and Hamilton are great, and the spin on home-invasion feels fresh.

A lot better than I expected but still wears it's influences on it's sleeve a little too hard (it's practically Poltergeist). Dull a lot of the time but surprisingly effective at others, and the final ten minutes are phenomenal. It might also be an allegory for the current U.S. financial crisis and how it has affected the average suburban family. Overall it's passable but weak.

Creepy somewhat, doesn't offer much in the way of scares but has a few welcome surprises up it's sleeve. Keri Russell carries a lot of the movie.

Totally ruined by the husband character who was unbearable. The other characters weren't much better. They were all soooo stupid and unlikeable (except J.K. Simmons' character). I fucking hate writing like this. And I hate the writers too. Fuck writers who write like this.

Goofily silly alien invasion horror movie is relatively sensible in its early stages (if not even a little dull) – the moment Simmons enters the picture, the film hops the rails into crazy town, which you’ll either go with or find irredeemable (but why not both?) Keeps its grip thanks to committed performances from Russell and Hamilton and an effective use of jump scares, though there are more unneeded digressions than necessary (especially Benet’s grotesque and sleazy red-herring).

the movie doesn't really go hard enough in its themes critical of american institutions and kind of fizzles out halfway through. it's pretty much a speedrun through every horror trope. it was decently well done so still entertaining

It was enjoyable an adventure, though somewhat forgettable as I realized at the end I had watched it before. It has a good build-up, but the acting isn't always convincing, and the ending leaves one rather unsatisfied.

This was a decent movie. Imagine your standard well done haunting/ghost/poltergeist movie with everything that entails now switch out the ghost for aliens and you have this movie. It literately follows that pattern step by step. The acting was solid and effects and music were mostly well handled.

dark skies. not bad. there was a bit of cornyness, and some "why would they even?.." like why would they arrange kitchen condiments/dishes that way? just to produce a symbol? no rhyme or reason, and if you say thats because their mysterious, just dumb, its too "just because". thats lazy reasoning for your "weird" moments, and its also ripping off poltergeist for no other reason but "wouldnt it be cool..."
other than that though, i enjoyed it. entertaining flick.
more good than bad id say.

Though the movie was bad in its own right, Dark Skies really gets its rating for being dull, uninspired and derivative. Nothing is unique as this movie is a mix of cliches that shouldn't have gone together in the first place, while the story itself travels around corners that shouldn't have existed considering the shape of this movie. It's only real plusses were J. K. Simmons and some nice production value considering the budget, but really, just watch one of the better movies based on this.

Dark Skies has some genuinely scary moments and starts strong, but the second half drags and I couldn't get past the fact that this broke family has a Mac desktop, nice furniture, and the ability to go install a security camera system all while they are 90 days past due on their mortgage.

Refreshing take on the "Poltergeist" genre but with Aliens. A little on the melodramatic side, segueing into after-school special territory before bringing it home with the looming horror of alien abduction. Like a good episode of the X-Files.

See if you can pick out all the movies this movie deliberately took all its ideas from. Signs? check. Paranormal Activity? check. Poltergeist? check. Uninspired but slickly produced like so many of these movies the Paranormal Activity/Insidious/Saw makers put out.

LOL kitchen's fucked, LOL bottles stacked on table, LOL eight security points tripped at once. Total troll job. This flick is... strange, to be honest. Some force just trolled the crap out of this family for awhile, the parents kind of hate each other because Capitalism, then OH SHIT! That first jump is a great one. Tension is built fairly well, but the screenplay leaves a lot to be desired for horror fans. Bonus points for unintentional comedy. I'm not saying it was aliens... but it was aliens.

We never actually get to see the dark skies because this is mostly an attempt to operate horror tricks into an abduction film set in times of economic meltdown -- and, therefore, family crisis. So, this is a Dimension/Weinstein product based on previous attempts by the producer of Paranormal Activity, Insidious and Sinister, but with the personality of an average TV show that tries too hard to put together ideas from Signs, Close Encounters and these horror flicks I've just mentioned.

These aliens put little devices in your head which means they can control you, but go ahead and fight because they won't just make you black out and stare into the sky when they abduct the person they want. Stupid movie.

Surprisingly good - better than the obvious influence "Paranormal Activity". The first half especially. As long as the movie keeps focus on people gradually realising they have no control over their lives (nightmares, blackouts, sleepwalking, mortages, uncaring authorities) it's creepy and the characters' reactions feel true. Unfortunately the second half turns into alien abduction twaddle we've seen a million times, even if it's played refreshingly straight as the horror it really would be.

Kind of a B-level SIGNS knockoff, but I thought it was cool and effective and suspenseful and well-directed. A solid genre picture, in other words, with (a little) more on its mind than cheapo "eeek! aliens!" jolts. Initially, we're not 100% sure this isn't just the tale of a family unraveling, and writer/director Stewart touches on issues like masculinity, the mom/dad family dynamic, and the importance of job/financial security to a family. After about an hour, though, it's "eeek! aliens!"

Got the atmosphere right, but a movie can't just be built on atmosphere. Probably about 50 episodes of The X-Files that are more compelling in 42 minutes than this movie could muster up in 90.

This was Paranormal Activity with Aliens instead of ghosts. I must say that the most glaring problem with this film was the script, some of the lines were just too goofy. The acting was even pretty bad which was disappointing because I like Keri Russell and J.K. Simmons. I found myself rolling my eyes a lot during this film and checking my progress to see how much time was left, after one hour it felt like at least two. There were a couple of scary scenes but not enough to make this movie good.
