Dark Matter

Quite a charming movie, until the end when it gets all... um... dark. Meryl Streep ones again proves her uncanny knack for lightness and humor. And her scene toward the end with Ye Liu is utterly heartbreaking.

It's refreshing to see any film that dares to suggest a culture's differences are not entirely positive or traffics in stereotypes & this offers a fascinating glimpse into the lives of Chinese students hired by colleges for their math-whiz brains. However the film loses a great deal of steam in its last act as it becomes unclear why the previously sympathetic protagonist is left so completely without alternatives & we watch him take actions that push us away rather than draw us in.

It's credit to both Streep and Quinn's integrity that Dark Matter uncovers the natural instincts and social foibles that underpin racism

Meh. The acting and the plot wasn't convincing to me and the ending was totally out of the blue. I also think the whole Chinese cultural thing was depicted horribly (IMO!). The theme the movie is trying (and failing) to project is interesting though, and I have no doubt it happens on basically any University.
