I loved the summer of ‘97, I was thirsting for volcanos. Doesn’t have fat guy melting in the subway but grandma melts in a lake. Kind of terrified of volcanos for a bit after, I don’t even live anywhere near a volcano and ... oh my god I probably live on top of a volcano.

I remember seeing this at a matinee as a teenager, and the whole audience just completely turned on the movie. It was one of the few spontaneous tribal experiences of my life. Just twenty people, an unlikely demo ranging from cute teenage girls to nerdy teenage girls to high school basketball players to me and my posse of wannabe punkers and druggies to elderly couples just out for an afternoon picture- all united in the cause of riffing this shit to pieces. Matinees rule.

The plot goes like this: Brosnan comes to a town built next to a volcano and says 'Hey man, that thing's gonna blow' then they all go 'Nuh-uh, it's never burned us alive before' then he goes 'Yah, seriously' so they go 'Huh, thanks for the heads-up' and an orderly and casualty-free evacuation takes place. He is then proclaimed a hero and gets to nail the hottest virgin in town (Well, they were going to sacrifice her to the volcano anyway). The End.

Fun disaster movie has the whiff of a 70s era script given a dust-off for the 90s – but it still works, leaning in to the silly and the familiarity without going (too far) into absurdity, and played with an endearing rock-jawed seriousness by Brosnan and Hamilton, who bring as much colour as they can to their cardboard characters. Depending on your familiarity with the 70s disaster cycle, this may ultimately play as too familiar and down the line, but it’s still a lot of fun.

Two thoughts from this film: Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton make for a handsome couple and should have been in one of those awful Nora Ephron movies may she rest in peace. The old lady lava swimming scene made me laugh and squirt diet dr pepper from my nose onto my chic fil a spicy chicken sandwich.

A pretty decent 'disaster' move that I saw in the cinema in my youth, so nostalgia likely playing a big role in my rating of the film. I still vividly remember the grandmother 'melting' in the lava flow.

Flaws include bad CGI, a generic romance, and having both a Terry and a Harry character (that one crater scene where they keep yelling at each other while a guy on a walkie-talkie is yelling at both of them is comically chaotic). It's good otherwise: the pre-explosion tension builds nicely, the disaster action afterwards is gritty and great (ashy drives, acidic boat rides, and claustrophobic underground treks all have real weighty suspense), and the practical effects hold up really well.

Sure, while the action and peril was entertaining enough, I was really more interested In finding out what the hell Linda Hamilton was putting in the town's coffee.

A tale about a bachelor, whose only previous shot at marriage ended in tragedy and therefore heartbreak, finding himself attracted to a woman who has already borne children from a previous marriage, and about his thus staking a claim to the woman's affections by accepting the burden of paternal responsibility that he must therefore adopt and live up to, a claim expressed via heroic deeds and the promise of future fishing vacations. Not really any worse than others of its ilk.

I'm guessing it would help, if you're making a film about volcanoes, to know at least SOMETHING about volcanoes. Specifically pyroclastic flows if you're gonna base your biggest special effect on them. No way was Brosnan gonna survive when that sucker blew.

The build-up of suspense in the first half is actually somewhat serious and realistic, helped immeasurably by the fantastic scenery of the area; the all-action second half could get tiresome but holds your attention, keeping the pace up and the audience interested. Even the daft stuff in this movie (the acid lake, crumbly town, invincible car, the dog, etc.) is amusing rather than annoying, and some of the effects are still impressive today. Surprisingly short on the lava mind.

An mediocre at best disaster film in which all logic goes out the window for the characters when the volcanologist warns the town and jumps into a acid lake once it finally erupts. The effects are good for the time. The characters are just so frustrating to follow because no one listens to the expert and everyone makes the dumbest decisions. The science behind it is bad they literally drive over lava then in the same vehicle outrun a pyroclastic flow that was 20 feet behind them.

Dante's Peak is definitely a guilty pleasure. It's dumb, it's stupid and it's generic of every other disaster movie. But it's probably one of my favourite generic disaster movies. Pierce Brosnan & Linda Hamilton both carry the film reasonably well but otherwise the supporting cast is woeful. I recall the score to be chilling and I remember feeling in suspense watching this for the first time. But looking back it's so frustrating how stupid this film can be and how dumb the characters are.

They ironically get a fair deal of the geology right, but that certainly doesn't save it from having absurdly idiotic characters with a cliche and poorly written plot. Characters in this movie literally do stupid shit just for the purpose of making some sort of problem or conflict in the plot which can be downright hilarious at times due to how obvious the attempt to do so is. The only quality of this movie is the level of its sheer terribleness.

Extremely mediocre action-disaster movie. I know Linda Hamilton's choices in men are somewhat limited, what with being cut off from civilisation by volcanic ashe and liquid magma. The movie gets a few things right, but "few" is the operative word. It's just so cheesy and ridiculous, with so many characters doing inconceivably stupid things for the sole purpose of "creating drama". It's just Pierce Brosnan telling everyone a volcano's gonna blow and no one believing him. And then once it blows everything, including logic, goes to hell.
