Fuck this shit. I mean it, this movie was definitely the worst I've have seen this year ... Cheasy lines (and im talking Hugh Grant cheasy), a terrible plot, and a family that was so 'perfect' you could do nothing else but hate it for it seemed like they were spawned from a '50s breakfast serial commercial. I hated everyone of the characters, could the family be anymore stereotypical?... And don't even get me started on the damn acoustic guitar soundtrack. ... yhukky.

Predictable as hell but I don't care, I enjoyed it. The cast is good and *shock* Dane Cook's terrible stand up is left on the floor and he just blends in with the rest of them. Ending was terrible though.

Holy moly why does this exist. It's basically watching a "Liberal Arts" family spend a weekend at a cottage and Steve Carrel sings Let my Love Open the Door. That's it. That is all that happens.

Dan in Real Life is a sweet and relatively subdued RomCom. There are no real standout moments nor anything that isn't predictable, but the acting is good throughout with a (now, 2020) recognisable cast. Enjoyable, but not ground-breaking.

A sweet story about love and complications. Juliette Binoche is absolutely marvelous, and Steve Carell is unexpectedly good. The three daughters were also acted well, and felt realistic. Even though this story is convoluted and complex it feels genuine. I quite enjoyed some of the funny situations and awkward moments. I highly recommended this as a funny upbeat love story with plenty of fun and unexpected moments.

One of the major criticisms I usually have for romantic comedies is that they have neglected one element or the other: either glossing over the romantic element in favour of bawdy humour or pointlessly tright schmaltz, or simply not being funny enough. This, on the other hand, without being groundbreaking or challenging, was gently heartbreaking in a way that I found really appealing. If chick flicks were more like this I'd have less of a problem with them.

What can I say!?... I liked this! It may be predictable, but personally I found myself enjoying every second, even the frankly ridiculous family settings. Its funny, light-hearted, and well shot, with Carell and Binoche making the most of the simple script. As for the ending; well it's all a bit soppy, and sloppy for that matter! But do we need to be depressed all the time?

Extremely annoying rom-com that was supposed to launch Steve Carell into more serious roles. The women are kind of bitchy and manipulative and the men are pushovers. It's Hollywood rom-com nonsense that they could churn out all day effortlessly.

Nice, touching film, sort of Sleepless in Seattle meets The Family Stone but less schmalzy. It should do for Steve Carell what The Truman Show did for Jim Carrey. It really uses every trick in the book to drum up sympathy for his character, then exposes his flaws. Just like real life, things turns out kind of messy. Great ensemble cast, some of whom were slightly underused. Just as good as the kind of movies it styles itself upon (Little Miss Sunshine, Juno, 500 Days of Summer...)

Too soft to be convincing. The family in the film engages in cutesy weekend pasttimes and snapping banter, but it never feels like an actual family. None of the relationships on-screen feel lived in or genuine, and most of very talented actors are idly adrift (including Juliette Binoche, oddly devoid of allure as the object of affection). Only Steve Carell transcends the material, playing a regular guy whose pained life is fraying despite his increasingly tense efforts to keep control.

Steve Carell treads through pools of sap here as best he can. Feeling like a 90-minute sitcom, the film has found a filmmaking purgatory--it's not a bad movie, but it's not worth a whole lot either. The problem being--I didn't fully know Carell's character or completely sympathize with him because the movie stays safe and lacks any real exploration or new ideas. It makes you smile, but not really laugh, and it has a charm, but you can't fully connect emotionally.

Manages to feel somewhat real despite being incredibly sappy. Carell and Binoche does not feel as believable as it needs to, which brings it down a bit. Overall, this is like a slightly less messy and slightly better version of the movie Family Stone.

If you were expecting something silly like The 40 Year Old Virgin, change your expectations. This a is a much more grounded rom-com where the leads try to navigate an awkward situation. The acting and comedy here is much more subtle. I laughed, I felt for these characters , and enjoyed the experience.

On top of that, I can't remember the last romantic comedy I saw in which the leading couple didn't take each other out for a sexual test drive before the credits rolled. Which isn't to say that Dan is squeaky clean on that front--especially his impromptu encounter with Marie in the shower. But as PG-13 flicks go, it doesn't push the content envelope nearly as far as many do these days. (pluggedin.com)

A beautifully tender piece of filmmaking. Great balance between light, soft humour and raw, honest emotion. It's all very low-key yet thoroughly compelling nonetheless. There's some pleasantly sbtle work from Steve Carell as Dan, too. Impressively, it only got a PG rating here in the UK; for a movie that deals with adult themes, there's very little here in the way of remotely objectionable content. (The MPAA found a way to tag it with a PG-13, mind.)

To be able to laugh at (or with) someone's flaws, and grow sympathy for someone even though they're jerks, you need to feel some empathy for them as well. This is mainly done by showing the audience that deep inside they still have a heart. It's very easy really. Sadly though, our "protagonist", Dan, are an entirely self-absorbed little shit.

About as bland as a romance film can be, with almost nothing of interest happening in the whole film and any conflict that pops up being solved almost immediately. Decent enough indie rom-com, albeit with more emphasis on the rom rather than the com. It's gentle, undemanding stuff, with some nicely bittersweet moments, but Carell's character does begin to grate after a while; he's endearing at first, but there comes a point where you just want him to MTFU and quit whining. Juliette Binoche is great - it's worth watching just for the scene where she leads the salsa workout. Funny and sexy at the same time!

Wow... usually when a movie has a PSI number THAT low, I can't sit through it without major nausea and/or eye-rolling. But this was a perfectly acceptable, if not ground-breaking flick with decent writing, characterization and ensemble acting. The suspension of disbelief required to finish this movie is amazing. No one's family is like this. The fact that some scriptwriter felt he could pull this one over on people is fascinating. Steve Carell's performance is actually good: he seems to capture the loss and hope equally well, but the rest of the acting is so awful that it doesn't really matter. Juliette Binoche is lovely to look at, but we know nothing about her character, so why should we care? And, really: a talent show? Really?

Bollocks. Could not care less about ANY of the blasted characters. The "awkward" moments were way too softcore to achieve any kind of rise out of me or sympathy for the pathetic, whiny character. It tries so hard to get you to relate to Carell's harmless personality, but it gets annoying before half of the movie has passed. You frankly want him to stop acting like a bitch. The movie peaks in the first 30 minutes, then it leaves you shot and bleeding for the drawn out remainder. Choking.
