Daddy Nostalgia

I think everyone remembers the first time they learnt that their parents were human, that they had their own thoughts, their own lives, their own trauma. Seeing through those cracks was scary, weakness appearing where before there was only strength. Colo Tavernier O'Hagan's script deals with this and a whole lot more. A window into the mind that's more reminiscent of a novel than a film, we linger on the emptiness, the silences filled with the musings from behind our own cracked walls.

A very well crafted meditation on death. The parent child relationships in the film feel very natural and despite the heavy subject matter there's a light mood to the film. Tavernier never feels the need to manipulate the audience for sympathy and that's something I really appreciate. It's interesting that this is Bogarde's last performance, he doesn't seem old at all despite the character he plays, but it's a fitting tribute.
