Not an interesting vampire or romance film. The tone switches between dry comedy and harsh drama (sometimes I'm not sure if it's trying to be both). It's entertaining enough, featuring some sharp and witty (if derivative) dialogue, though it never quite manages to tie the themes of love, lust, addiction, and religion coherently together. I do really love the gospel song scene, check it out on YouTube.

Gross, bizarre, and at times incomprehensible - but a masterclass in technical direction from Spike salvages this from being his worst yet.

In some ways, this seems like a mash-up of ideas and concerns that don't all cohere. But there are also moments of sheer brilliance in the film--none better than gospel number/dolly shot near the film's end. Lee's concerns for the black community are chillingly rendered, with particular pessimism toward the role of black men in society. I am troubled by the emphasis on sexual violence and bloodied naked bodies, but maybe that's part of the point.

Stark imagery but Lee holds every shot for about 10 seconds longer than he needs to.

Viewed June 23, 2015. A sultry and bizarre romance that alternates between moments of quiet philosophical contemplation and lurid, blood-soaked sex. The performances aren't great, but this one is all about Spike Lee himself, who is probably having a blast making this reflexive, energetic and pretty damn sexy film.

Interesting thematic content, and some very good moments, but with a wooden central performance, and a notably cold detached style that feels more in line with Soderbergh, but still retain's Lee's sexuality. At just over 2 hours though the film pushes my patience, and is slow and meandering - until towards the end the pace ramps up and the ending feels rushed, and lacks power because of it.
