Price gives it his all but to no avail. This tipped the delicate balance of what made the Witchfinder General so good and fell into sleaze territory instead.

When "Witchfinder General" was a hit, "Mark of the Devil" was released as a much raunchier version. This flick feels like AIP trying to get in on that with Price starring in a very violent, pretty sloppy witch hunter flick with lots of bare breasts (although all of the bare breasts were cut for the American release). This one is fun for a while, but it eventually succumbs to the build up of sloppy plotting. Seek out the uncut version for an animated title sequence by Terry Gilliam.

Hessler's period horror outing, which opens with a quote from the oft plundered Poe, contains several effective scare sequences and an authoritative performance by Price as the sadistic magistrate.
