The film ends with a slo-mo shot of people shaking their heads in disgust while the Verve's "Bitter Sweet Symphony" plays. Yes, it's one of the best endings to a film I have seen.

The good thing about digital copies as opposed to VHS is that it isn't worn down when rewatching particular scenes. While not amazing, granted, the rest of this movie actually isn't half-bad.

Thank goodness it has *that* scene with Sarah Michelle and Selma. It also has a star-studded cast and an obnoxiously relentless string of 90s hit songs, but aside from that delight, it's really weak stuff. Teenage fantasy drivel which paved the way for a generation of YA abominations.

Gellar was pretty much made for this role, so 40 points go to her. Then an additional 7 points go to me for not partaking in self-harm every time Phillippe was on screen with that atrocious haircut and his gag-worthy "acting". Ugh. This film is essentially a glorified Gossip Girl episode with dialogue worthy of a porno, but it was verrrrrry entertaining.

A sorta bad/sorta good movie that qualifies as a guilty pleasure. It's hard to turn away from it when you catch it on USA, but put it in the DVD player and try to sit all the way through and you'll be surprised how disinterested you become.

Sarah Michelle Gellar delivers a decent performance, but for such a star-studded cast the acting is very flat, especially for the male principal, Phillippe. The strange ritzy upper-class New York setting is also hard to relate to - if you're going then you should take further advantage of it and show some more interesting scenes and cinematography.

So it happens that I'm rating this higher than Dangerous Liaisons (1988) -an unexpected move between movies of completely different leagues!!! Contrary to my prejudice before seeing, this movie is a clever take on the book; true to the spirit, good soundtrack decisions, funny and sexy as hell. So I had to watch it too late after so many years due to my bias which turned out to be wrong.

It's a film that's worth watching if only for its characters, which were well-written and intriguing. Seeing them manipulate their victims might not be endearing, but it's engaging. The story is full of cliche, and the actors aren't exactly all that good, but I still can't say that I had a bad time while watching it. This is a film that takes an 18th-century novel and transplants its setting to New York in the 1990s. I was always interested in what would happen next.

While I'm sure the book was better I liked the movie quite well, if nothing else, for the frank look at the relationships of manipulators. If you've never interacted with supremely fake or manipulative people (or politics) this movie probably loses everything.

I really loved the concept; getting to see two borderline sociopaths who interacted with the world through manipulation was fascinating. Unfortunately, there was too much that didn't work. It's often cheesy, it occasionally resembles the quality of porn, Selma Blair's character is unbearable, the redemption wasn't earned, and the ending was awful. I laughed at everything that happened during the Bittersweet Symphony montage.

Cruel Intentions might be a great movie, for me, because it was a hit during my formative years. The cast is filled with young actors who came up in Hollywood while I was coming up in life. The story of a brother and sister during summer break from boarding school who scheme and manipulate the people around them for their own enjoyment is engrossing. Ryan Phillippe is fantastic in this movie. He is aweful throughout the whole movie, which makes it savory when he somehow redeems himself.

Although the story at hand is ultimately a tragic one, and includes a masterfully-done conclusion involving Gellar that rivals the one in "Dangerous Liaisons", this is also an often very funny comedy, particularly when dealing with small blink-and-you'll-miss details involving the characters, the always-amusing dialogue, and the infantile antics of Cecile.

Clever adaptation of the novel to modern times and younger ages, and probably with hard influence of the acting in Stephen Frears' version. Some changes are good and some are arguable (for example, the ending), but reasonable (it's his version, there're enough out there and we don't have to get just copycats). Worst thing is probably the score and the over-over-acted Selma Blair, I don't know if it's her fault or director asked her to do that, but it's by far too much.

What can I say, it's a guilty pleasure. A glossy teen contemporary version of Les Liaisons Dangereuses that while inferior to the likes of Frears' 1989 Dangerous Liaisons, at least has a cracking soundtrack. As for the film itself, its clearly not meant to be taken seriously and as a trashy teen drama it entertains and titillates enough to be one I enjoy going back to every few years. Buffy as a bitch? It worked for teenage me, and still does!

Why should every literature classic be viciously raped by piss-poor Hollywood adaptations? Sexual manipulation and abuse would make for an introspective, absorbing exploitation film, and this one tries to be sexy, thrilling and dangerous, but it is only ever drab, pretentious and stupid. The only thing I agree with this film: "E-mail is for geeks and paedophiles. Write her a letter." You tell them that, Sebastian!
