Good history lesson for why things have gotten to where they are in South LA. The background on the Watt's riots (and what led up to them) was riveting. I thought that was the stongest part of this documentary. It gave a good foundation to then move into the current situation with today's youth and adults infested in the gang life. The line at the end stating that studies show kids growing up here have higher post-traumatic stress cases then those living in Baghdad. Wow.

A pretty well worth documentary that brings social awareness and a history that goes back to the Watts riots and further.

Kind of funny when it starts laying on the pathos, and fails to extend its' inquiry beyond the established narrative of race relations in America after the 60's. That the gang members are only there as crutches, essentially, to re-iterate that narrative and don't go much into detail about what it is they do is disappointing. Good soundtrack.

The only solid structure in this is the 1965 Watts riots and the 1992 Rodney King riots (in which case watch LA 92 instead), everything else is anecdotal boring bullshit that doesn't offer the slightest bit of insight.

We defer blame for every problem we have in this oblivious, oppressive and obstinate fucking country and it's time to stop living in that all-American state of denial and self-gratification so that we can come together and agree on the first-hand realities of our society's unprecedented and on-going horror show. Everybody, from those in the know to reactionary white conservatives, needs to give this film a watch. Do it. The anger is good for you.

Intriguing at first but comes off a little too heavy-handed towards the end. Having an old white dude from Berkeley pontificate about young black males being held down by I quote "the man" just comes off as a big eye-roll that hijacks much of the force behind the subject matter. It just comes off as an unenlightening sociology/anthropology thesis that tries to play to the emotions more than facts.

There's about 40ish minutes of really interesting material in this (The Watt riot material) but then the rest is just "wah wah wah", there's no real information given about the gangs themselves but stories about grandma selling crack.

an informative and well made documentary, that dwells too harshly upon the attempted tear jerking and empathization for the people. the nuggets of history and story telling of past events leading up to now is what makes this worth while. so throw out all the excess and you essentially have about 40 minutes of material that was very well done, the rest is filler crap that you can simply ignore.

Today, like then, the conservative rich coalition creates evil and destruction in wake.

'Crips and Bloods: Made in America' wasn't so much about the rival gangs as it was about the trials and tribulations that the African Americans of South Central LA had to face for over 100 years, and lead to the problem of the gangs. There isn't much light shed on the gangs themselves. Instead, you are given anecdotes that are repeated multiple times before moving onto the next topic. Had this film had a little more focus and dug a little deeper, I would have enjoyed it much more.

I would have liked to see more depth of information but it is still an entertaining documentary.

2 words why this was lame: "crips" and "bloods", its leaving out major parts on that topic (ms13, 18st, ...)
