In 1995, this film was spoofed everywhere: Conan O'Brien, The Simpsons, even Mad TV (with an all-female version). That impact is because Tony Scott made a fantastic picture that works as a tense drama about driven men, as well as an action thriller in the grand tradition of military movies. The casting is a perfect 90's time capsule, as several supporting actors became movie stars in their own right. While the Hollywood ending is unavoidable, the path is fun as hell and full of subtext.

A good drama, with impeccable acting and an intriguing and believable ethical quandary at its core. The film isn't as relentlessly claustrophobic as Das Boot, but that wasn't exactly what they were going for anyway. It does rely too heavily on the sort of stock scene we've seen too many times in too many films and TV shows. Tellingly, Denzel Washington's character references Star Trek multiple times, admittedly in a somewhat tongue-in-cheek fashion.

It's surely one of the great ironies of history that it may only have been because of his exposure to the realities of nuclear disaster (a year earlier on the K-19) that in 1962 Vasili Arkhipov really did possibly save the world. Here, the use of vivid red, blue and green lighting to make submarine interiors seem less visually boring is overdone, and the use of Tarantino-added references to STAR TREK and superheroes to make naval dialogue seem less robotic is out of place. Same goes for the dog.

The best parts of this film are the scenes that Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman have together. Watching these two great actors work with each other is a pleasure. The script is good as it keeps things moving along and exciting. I would recommend this film.

I remember a simpler time thinking no one serious would come to blows over Marvel comics. Great Hackman action and Denzel. We adopted a Jack Russel Terrier back in 1998 that was a total asshole (I wonder why the original owner gave him up) and his name was Bear. I hope they were huge Crimon Tide fanatics.

There's only so much tension and excitement that can be derived from a bunch of sweaty guys crammed together in an underwater tuna can, but there's nothing like a stand-off in a Tony Scott movie and the cast makes the best out of a mediocre story. Simpson and Bruckheimer nailed it a year later with The Rock.

Best viewed as an entertaining "pissing match" writ large - Hackman and Washington are both superb here, and make you wish for a better realised (and more complex) examination of both characters - it's entirely to Hackman's credit that his Ramsey is never a caricatured warmonger, just a man driven almost suicidally to adherence to duty, making even the potentially cornball final scene quite moving in its way. Awkward uncredited interjections by Tarantino in the screenplay are largely unwelcome.

C.T is about the clash of two military mindsets: the pre-emptive strike mentality (Hackman) and the more measured approach of strategic possibilities reflecting the increasing uncertainty of post-Cold War reality(Washington). This antagonism isn't explored in a particularly complex way, but it underlies the central conflict powering the narrative around ambiguous military orders. It's a pulse pounding race against time driven by strong performances and Zimmer's propulsive score.

One of the most-watched movies ever for me; it's not great, and not much for character development, but it's highly entertaining and never annoys. The sprawling ensemble cast of bonafied stars and character actors is a lot of fun to watch.

Amazing performances from both Gene Hackman and Denzel Washington. It's even packed with a great supporting cast such as Viggo Mortensen and Ryan Phillippe in his first (and very minor) role. Is it a completely factual story that strives to be an accurate recreation of naval conduct? No. Is it a highly entertaining and tense film? Absolutely. There's some fantastic dialog throughout the film even for smaller roles. Well worth seeing.

Good submarine movie. Sort of an "action movie of ideas" with the two lead characters representing two very different points of view, and the humorous touches (allegedly the uncredited contribution of Quentin Tarantino) leaven the heavy stuff nicely

Great cinematography and turns highlight this taut thriller packed tight with sweaty men with the weight of the literal world on their shoulders. Does well to slowly sow the central seeds of tension (see the riveting talk about the philosophy of war) before the back-and-forth third act battle where mutinous morals and stubborn guts burst through the repeated layers of protocol. Unfortunately, its high stakes and nuanced ethical wrestling are undermined by a smirky "agree to disagree" ending.

Crimson Tide does a lot of the good things a Jerry Bruckheimer and Tony Scott movie should do. It's got pulse pounding scenes of physical action and potentially world ending moments. It's got a score by Hans Zimmer that keeps you on the edge of your seat. It's got solid acting from some of the best stars. I don't think that this movie is as realistic as some other sub movies but it's more fun. I wasn't completely satisfied with the ending of the race plot but that's didn't hold it back.

Seen: 2. The premise is bordering on outlandish, and some of the scenes are too hammy. But the tension is thick, the pacing is great, the stakes couldn't be higher, and the cast is exceptional. Gandolfini is so good at being a dickhead.

This is a tense and grippping watch for the most part. Its a film about challenging authority and control of power and it features a thrilling performance by Gene Hackman and slightly less memorable one by Denzel Washington. It has quite a claustrophobic feel, with the lighting being mostly bright lights in various colours (mostly reds, greens and blues) which are reflected on the characters faces and in the background (its set on a submarine vessel). This is a solid film I'd recommend.

feels too quick to be appropriately tense. Hackman and Washington are excellent, to say nothing of the pure talent in the supporting roles; Gandolfini and Mortenson excel. but it's never quite as nail-biting as a plot involving the fate of the entire world should be. it is also a definitive product of the Clinton Era, complete with an ending where "both sides are right and both sides are wrong" is delivered with complete sincerity by an uncredited esteemed actor

If you are watching this movie on DVD you are likely to pause it in the middle, go check the Internet or just chill for a while, and then come back to it. Something about its pacing makes it stiff and boring. Tarantino was hired to make dialogs more fun, but all those geeky references just seem out of place. Scenes with Hackman and Washington together are best. However, their characters are just stereotypes seen so many times before.

There are two Scott brothers the older brother Ridley has been knighted, has been nominated for 3 oscars and created classics like Alien, Blade Runner, Thelma & Louise, Gladiator and many more. Unfortunatly this movie made by the younger brother Tony, the creator of movies such as Top Gun, Beverly Hills Cop 2 and Days of Thunder. Crimson Tide will never be a great movie, it's adequate and serves a purpose, but it wil never be more than a poor mans Das Boot or Hunt for the Red October.

When a movie takes place in a confined space, one of two things will happen: a) it looks cheap and dull real soon / b) the intensity is heightened, making for one hell of a ride. This movie falls into the second category because the great lead performances and the superb script (kudos to the uncredited Mr. Tarantino!), supported by Scott's visual style (smoke, lights, angles) really make this one shine. You may have to be a bit of a military buff to fully enjoy it, though. Great score by Zimmer!
