Crazy Horse

As with LA DANSE, this is at its best when it lets us into the creative, institutional and commercial process and its many arguments and disagreements, or when it takes the time to show us the finished work. But I'm not sure the Paris Opera Ballet would ever hire an "artistic director" quite like Ali Mahdavi (Decouflé's irritation is very obvious). The routines themselves were variable: some were quite impressive, but after a while the technical and artistic limitations start to show.

Wiseman looks and listens beyond the obvious eroticism and titillation - without denying it - to present 'Crazy Horse' as an institution founded on hard work and creative ideas. This is a film about disciplining the mind and the body in order to entertain the mind and the body of an expectant audience. The scene of the performers watching, in their (un)dressing room, ballet bloopers is a most pleasing moment of levity.

This excursion detracts from his best virtue as a director, how he manages to slip unnoticed into ordinary life, by reducing it to a surface only view of a group which, will interesting, does come off as middlebrow in attitude which goes against their belief in their performances as art. If it stepped away from one of the performances and followed someone else, say the cleaners, rather than the stage and the creators this could have been closer to his best work.

Feels too repititive to be truly engaging. And it lavks a sense of the creative process behind the nude numbers though they are incredibly sexy.
