Bridges performance is exceptionally powerful and excellent, but the whole romance going on in this film just doesn't work. Gyllenhaal hams it up and Farrell isn't that good in this particular movie. I found myself lost within the country music, and I don't even like country. A good but overrated film. Jeff Bridges has done a lot better in the past too. This is definitely not his best role and I honestly don't think he deserves to win the Oscar, no offense.

I'm slowly starting to realize that Jeff Bridges may well be the best actor of the past 25 years. He does it again with this understated gem, completely losing himself in the role of a burned out country star on his way toward circling the proverbial drain. There's the obligatory one-night stand(s), vomiting, etc. but the performances are so committed and the story takes just enough unexpected detours to make this one something special. And Bridges can carry a tune, as well! The man is a dynamo.

Bridges was as good in this as Rourke was in The Wrestler, which is to say he was GREAT. The times when he was performing on stage or interacting with Gyllenhaal's son were phenomenal. The soundtrack was perfect. Definitely not predictable either. Loved it.

This film succeeds largely due to excellent performances given by both Jeff Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal. Granted, there are some touching moments but strip away all the star power and you will find a slightly middling drama with a theme reminiscent of The Wrestler. Only, The Wrestler does it so much better.

A simple - yet not banal - story of whiskey, love, music, regret and redemption. I'm pretty sure a lot of people will write it of as generic Oscar bait. Not me. I felt it was touching without being melodramatic and Blake's final attempts to get his life straight didn't come off as a plot device, but as a natural consequence of his past. I choose to praise the film rather than criticize it for its spirit. Standout performance from Jeff Bridges backed by an awesome country soundtrack.

Bridges is pretty much the whole show, and a generous show it is. To outward appearances, he's approximately one-third Kris Kristofferson (the constipated voice and the wheezy wince to produce it) and two-thirds Waylon Jennings (the greasy stringy hair, the bedraggled beard, the shades, the leather vest, the paunch), in no part original but in every part authentic.

A tough one to rate, more of a film for the worn out soul, slightly bogged down by peripheral characters yet the film grew on me as it progressed. Cooper fails to paint a hardhitting portrait of Blake but I enjoyed the songs and Bridges is very good (though Joaquin Phoenix ("Two Lovers) or Tahar Rahim ("A Prophet") gave better performances in 2009). I'll probably enjoy it even more in the years to come.

Jeff Bridges turns in a praise-worthy performance in a run-of-the-mill Oscar bait movie if ever there was one. This is this year's 'The Wrestler,' but 'Crazy Heart' isn't as impacting. The relationships and plot developments are by-the-numbers. It's a satisfactory movie with all the trappings of alcohol abuse and relational dysfunction with a country music backdrop. The film will be remembered solely as the vehicle for which the Academy paid Jeff Bridges his due, and nothing more.

Whatever. The awards shows are right in that Jeff Bridges disappears into his character in a way few big stars are able to, and he's a joy to watch for the first half hour or so. But then we have to watch him bottom out and sober up and become a better man and NOPE; hackneyed and dull and I've seen it a million times before. And the romance even more so. I saw this in a packed theater and I'm reasonably certain I was the only person under 45 in attendance, let alone under 25.

One thing about 'Crazy Heart' that makes it different from other movies like it is that Bad Blake is actually a nice guy. He doesn't blame anyone but himself for where he has ended up and takes what he's given. There will be comparisons to 'The Wrestler' for the same reasons, but I feel that's a movie about someone who can't let go. Bad Blake can let go and is forced to at every turn. Yet, the only reason that bad things happen to Bad is because he doesn't have the respect he should for himself.

Testament to the credo that if you get the right actors and a sharp writer, even the hoariest cliches can find vibrant life - the specifics are important here, starting with Bridges, Gyllenhaal and Farrell who create genuine, distinctive characters from their stock archetypes (with both Bridges and Farrell more than passable c&w singers), along with Cooper's screenplay which finds intriguing twists on the relationships between the main characters. A fine soundtrack for this fair weather c&w fan!

Reasonably predictable, straightforward, simple story but acted with such amazing style by Jeff Bridges (with great support from Farrell, Gyllenhaal and Duval) that every second is an absolute delight. If there was a competition for fewest complete turkeys in their back catalogue, Bridges would surely come out well on top. Bad Blake is a character you SO want to stop screwing up, and Bridges is one of the few actors who could make you care that much. Great music too, delivered with conviction.

Far better than the boilerplate indie drama it resembles on the surface, the script takes many subtle, unexpected twists that also serve 2 sharply distinguish Bridges' character from the generic has-been we've seen one 2 many times. Bridges is great, as is Gyllenhall, who's given less to work w/, but carves out an equally real female lead, that in other hands might feel throwaway or incomplete. And thanks 2 T-Bone Burnett the country "hits' played here feel as authentic as the rest of the film

This is not a teenager movie. In fact, you may have to be at least 40 to appreciate it. This is very much what you want if you want a quality picture and you don't feel like _Avatar_. Bridges is terrific, as usual. Gyllenhaal has never been prettier. Not only is this *not* a total downer, but it's basically _The Wrestler_ done right. The wrestler comparisons are annoying, because they ignore the real hallmark of this movie: a plot driven by completely original songs that actually manage to sound like they could have been all-time hits in this alternate universe. A story about a middle aged country western singer (Jeff Bridges) who has spent most of his life drunk and screwing things up. Maggie Gyllenhaal is marvelous in her role as his unlikely lover. Robert Duvall and Collin Farrell are also good. Alcoholism and his deteriorating health dominate the story. He tries to clean up and redeem himself at the end. Some of the music is good by country western standards, or at least tolerable if you are not a fan.

Bridges was, as usual, fantastic -- especially his singing and guitar work. His scenes with Gyllenhaal's kid were among the best in the film. I had a few minor complaints: I don't buy Colin Farrell as a country singer, rehab is NOT that easy (especially for a 57 year old lifetime drunk) and the writing was ridiculously predictable. All that aside, I would definitely watch this again. "That's good, bad."

Brutally boring. A familiar story made more problematic by its wan execution. There's almost a complete absence of any sort of visual panache, and a corresponding disinterest in pushing the story into interesting, novel directions. Anyone with a few movies under their belt could probably map out the path of the story after watching the first few scenes. An inadequate copy-cat of "The Wrestler", I couldn't get into a single aspect of this movie. Bridge's performance is fine, but the script and character don't really allow him to truly shine, he's just stuck being drunk, grumpy, or searching for kids he's lost.
