Like a lot of musicals of the era, Cover Girl is less interested in being a satisfying whole and instead aspires to little more than assembling some satisfying parts. The film's finest showcase scenes belong to Kelly, including a dance sequence that shows off his astounding, athletic dancing and some pretty nifty trick photography. Most of the film clanks along like the piece of recycled studio machinery it is, but there's at least the always-welcome presence of Eve Arden in a supporting role.

You really cannot take your eyes off Hayworth as both dancer and cover girl. Sure, Kelly is handsome, but he gets overshadowed by Hayworth's beauty. The trio of Rusty, Danny and Genius is a lot of fun to watch, particularly when they're clowning around. Not all of the musical and dance numbers hit the right note, but enough do to make for a highly entertaining film. You can tell that Kelly was given quite a lot of creative control in terms of the dance routines, they are eye catching.

Likeable, but not a keeper.

Pretty typical musical, this one taking a little from Cinderella in a dancer's surprising shot to the top. Gushy love story with some so-so songs. The dancing is quite good, especially Kelly's dance-off with himself.

Cover Girl (1944) is a showcase musicals where the focus is on those musical scenarios rather than a coherent story. The lack of plot keeps this from being the magical experience it should have been. Instead we're left with beautiful and impressive scenes without a proper thread linking them to a complete experience. I absolutely loved the watching Gene Kelly dance with himself! Rita Hayworth was dashing, yet not as glamorous as she usually looks. A lot to love!

Decent musical; highlights were the sequence in which Gene Kelly, Rita Hayworth and the comic relief guy dance and sing happily through a street and the dance Gene Kelly does with his own superimposed conscience.

Hayworth's picture for sure and she carries it admirably, though the supporting cast is good when needed. Both the musical parts and comedic parts are good and the story's fine. Nothing really special, but it's solid entertainment.

Enjoyable, despite the creaky plot and intermittently awful writing, mostly because of Eve Arden. Oh, and Kelly's and Hayworth's dancing.

an average start with some decent dancing and song, by the time we get to the middle all this movie seems to do is spin it's wheels and that tepid plot is only held up by the above average musical renditions. the the real saver here is the ending, of course it's contrived and feel good, but what else do you expect from a musical made in the 40's?
