Visually a beautiful family movie movie. Story wise, all over the place. I appreciated the post-traumatic Lassie aspect, and the bravery during the war scenes. Actually some quality acting by Lassie! The build-up felt too much like filler rather than elevating the experience. Nice to see Elizabeth Taylor growing-up, but this wasn't a very memorable one for her. Here the animals showed more emotion than the stiff human actors.

Surprisingly good, though that first shot of 14-year-old Liz Taylor sunning herself is like an unironic premonition of Lolita. The 30s-40s were real cavalier about that.
