The staging is awful (the Countess & soldier's kissing isn't passionate, only awkward; the princess escapes her mute kidnapper by just pushing him) & the writing worse. There is no protagonist for a viewer to hope for here; no sense that a twist is on the way. Bathory is evil & aided by inexplicably complicit people all around. Why does the Captain help her cheat on him? A priest goes along w/ it & then the "nice" soldier does too. Even the 2 main villains fail to be a threat to one other!

Great concept poorly executed, Pitt sadly not used to her full potential unlike Vampire Lovers.

One of the first Hammer films I saw, at too early an age despite the fact that, aside from some blood and nudity, there's little to truly offend, but it doesn't stand up at all. It's biggest problem is that its nearly all scenes of tedious conversations rather than something that lives up to its 'Horror' genre tag or macabre. It's such a shame as, excluding her physical beauty, Ingrid Pitt makes a captivating and charming main star that is surrounded by a sluggish and disinteresting film.

A slightly above average late period Hammer film based not on vampires at all, but on the story of Elizabeth Bathory (kind of). Less colourful than you might expect from a hammer production instead filled with a lot of warm soft lighting which goes well with the costuming and the ornate set design. Not entirely bloodless, but for a story where a woman bathes in blood to stay young you might expect a little more. Pitt dominates every scene she is in and radiates off the screen.

I liked the story but I thought that the direction was bland and the acting terrible.

A pretty good premise with potential, but it's mostly unfulfilled despite a few good scenes.

With some of the charm associated with Hammer, but uninteresting and boring throughout.

Proficient and engaging. Not a single character is likeable and not a single interaction between them is positive - which is enjoyable for your repressed schadenfreude, and makes for some excellent horror.

Great production values and an entertaining story. Oh and lots of boobs! More melodrama than horror though.

Booby trap warning. Several boobies but not enough often. There is a decent story, but unfortunately the style is more melodramatic than scary or horror. The quantity of interesting scenes are just a few.

A little too melodramatic to make for good horror. There are some very horrific scenes but they are too few and far between. Ingrid Pitt was especially good though as playing an old and young Bathory.

Dissapointing, I thought this would have been about Elizabeth Bathory not this tripe which it turns out only borrows her name and a couple of events. If not for the misinformation it would have gotten a better score.
