People are right when they say "Coraline" doesn't have a deep plot going for it. But it doesn't need one either. The excellent visuals and music, along with an atmospheric fairy-tale world inhabited by intriguing and imaginative characters were more than enough to pull me in, and not let go until the closing credits roll.

I think this film is overlooked and underrated simply because in the past couple of years everyone has been jumping on the family friendly pixar hype train. Coraline is a near perfect adaptation of Neil Gaiman's haunting and beautiful dark fairytale. Coraline is not necessarily for young kids but it is one of the most visually interesting and original animated films to come out in a long time.

Incredibly thoroughly crafted and constructed, its aesthetics are as solid as its central themes. Selick should be thoroughly ashamed of himself for not making films more often - he's clearly an artist and this surpasses Nightmare Before Christmas with apparent ease. It's rare I'm so emotionally invested and engaged in a film these days, and this achieves that remarkably. Hatcher's voice acting really impressed me, and so did Fanning who I think I have a newfound respect for. Great.

A beautifully animated, highly imaginative, and all around superbly crafted version of an old conceit. For previous versions of this film see Alice in Wonderland, The Wizard of Oz, Labyrinth, Pan's Labyrinth, James and the Giant Peach, Mirrormask, The Phantom Tollbooth, Spirited Away, or a hundred other variations of kids escaping their boring/painful real life to a wondrous land that turns out to not be everything they expect and then they learn that real life isn't so bad afterall.

As an adult entertainment, this was a fun time. However, as it is directed at children, it pushed the envelope a bit too far, particularly in the burlesque scene. The animation was imaginative and inventive, though the characterizations and the narrative both need a bit more development. Overall, a nice blend of humor, adventure, fantasy, and child's parable.

I'll start with the obvious. The animation is amazing. If you end up having little interest in the plot, the animation makes it hard to look away. There were some slow sections, but I barely cared. The voice acting was really good, especially Ian McShane as Bobinsky and Keith David as the cat. Lovely movie, worth a watch just to prove that stop-motion is still awesome.

Visually brilliant and chock-full of dark fantasy elements, but without that overpowering Goth-girl Burton touch. However, I stick by my observation that Neil Gaiman should stick to writing novels and stay away from screenplays. That, and Dakota Fanning should stick to shutting up.

I don’t care what anyone says, of all of the forms of media and animation as a whole, stop motion will always age like fine wine. I’ve never ever been bored with these movies. Laika doesn’t miss, but this is my favorite from them. It’s actually creepy, and I love that the dialogue doesn’t talk to the audience and kids watching it like they’re idiots. Gaiman is a damn genius, and so is Henry Selick. Also, one of the best movie cats ever. breathtaking from beginning to end.

The stop motions really adds to the films surreal feel. While I feel that the film does drag a bit in places somewhat overall it has an excellent and imaginative story that will keep you wanting to watch more and more. I did feel that some of the voice acting wasn't as good as I was hoping, notably Teri Hatcher. However Keith David is superbly cast and French and Saunders were an excellent touch. Plus Dakota Fanning does a superb job. In short, the good far outweighs the bad.

( Mr. Bobinsky is my favorite ) They created a wonderful Fantasy Movie for old and young and I'm very happy to see that there are good animated movies out there at the edge of all those other boring cgi sequels like kung fu panda, shrek 3 andy maaaaany others.Even the soundtrack is something special. Selick has found a story perfectly suited to his methodology. He can let his imagination churn and bustle as the title character explores the inverted world of alluring pleasures she finds down a pathway hidden behind a strange, short door in the wall. Selick fills the frame with giddy, alluring imagery, taking full advantage of his capability to bend the world any which way he cares to.

Coraline is supposed to be a cute girl the audience can warm up easily, but Henry Selick succeeds to change the character into a 'The-Other-Girl' who is very irritating, obnoxious and way too annoying unlike Neil Gaiman's version in the book. I think little Coraline had deserved every single horror she faced with, nonetheless, those horrific events failed to satisfy my disgust since Selick succeeded to create such a great hatred for our so-called-protagonist character.

A beautiful film with a feeble plot structure. Almost every frame is extremely thoughtfully composed, & the music is mothersbaugh-worthy in its playfulness & catchiness. The scene in the garden is a favorite. That said, the story proceeds like a video game; in fact, the whole second half could easily be divided into levels. More like Pan's Labyrinth than Nightmare Before Christmas.

It's a fairy tale. Hence it's for children. But it's a horror story, so...Well, ask Neil Gaiman. Or Brothers Grimm for that matter. The animation and music especially stand out.

A complete disappointment. I thought it would be similar to the Nightmare Before Christmas but Coraline has nothing in common with that masterpiece except stop-motion animation. Coraline lacks a single compelling character, the script is dull and lifeless, and the story seems pointless and aimless. Though Pan's Labyrinth suffered from many of the same problems as this film, at least Pan's Labyrinth had a revolution going on in the real world to break up the monotony of the dream world. Poor.

Nice and dark. Some incredible stop motion animation provides great eye candy, helping to draw you into the two worlds of the story. Beautiful, unpredictable, truly charming, and surprisingly disturbing at times. It's great to have a female heroine who isn't a Lara Croft type, but the film still has her as whiny or a damsel in distress in several places, and there's some other unpleasant gender-related stuff going on. Coraline is a beautifully crafted stop-motion animated film from Henry Selick, also known for The Nightmare Before Christmas. The lighting, textures and the visuals in general are jaw-droppingly beautiful and while the story itself didn't intrigue me that much being a little older than the targeted audience, I did enjoy the film as a whole, and the excellent voice casting probably has something to do with that. The look of this film is just "wow". Seriously. The story isn't bad, for a kids' film. But it's not anything especially creative or new. It felt like it ran a little long at the end, but I wouldn't say it dragged. This almost falls into the Pan's Labryinth category - where the film may be too adult for children, yet too childish for adults - but may just be appropriate for both groups.

Getting away finally from the shadow of Tim Burton, Henry Selick's 'Coraline' is visually awe-inspiring and gorgeous. But the plus-plus side of Selick's new film is his skill as screenwriter, drawing closely to Neil Gaiman's novel, and presenting a fairy tale in its truest form: Enchanting, surreal and at times downright creepy. I've always thought Coraline was one of Gaiman's weaker titles and the film adaption doesn't fair much better. Visually interesting both in terms of animation and cinematography, but like its book it's limiting in terms of how much it wants to explore its subject matter and the general world it created. Fundamentally, it's a very basic story that runs on the conceit of never trusting something that's too good to be true, but doesn't care much to ask why it isn't true and why the illusion?

Creepy and equally charming. Not overly saccharine. Makes fair use of the medium while trying to ground the viewer in a "real" world.

Great soundtrack and animation. The plot is fine.

Stunning and beautifully animated, though obviously inspired by Burton's Nightmare Before Xmas in style and execution (not that that's a bad thing). The characters were more kooky than interesting though and the plot suffers because of this. Was nice to see a kids movie able to explore quite dark and scary subject matter for a change.

A visual delight and a solid voice cast make for a fun animated film. The messages beyond the animation are great too and it works across the board on all levels. It fully embraced the animated style and creates a stunning world that has secrets hidden among it just like life.
