It's actually very funny at times, with great performances from Julianne Moore and Charles Dutton. I'm not a big Glenn Close fan but she's pretty good here. Altman imbues the film with his trademark lack of plot and deliberate pace and it's probably all the better for it.

Enjoyable movie with a lot going on in terms of character relationships and crime (or falsified crime) in a cosy setting. Quirky in the right ways for me.

Basically two hours of Glenn Close dragging her fingernails down a chalkboard. Dutton and Beatty make it almost bearable, but Julianne Moore is depressingly wasted. An idiot plot if there ever was one.

Cookie's Fortune is another middling lightweight late career effort by Altman whose breezy surface is often mistaken for subtle directorial mastery rather than lazyness. Like most of his 90's films the emphasis is on the actors, and as usual he has assembled a talented cast who fit into his world and perform to the best of their ability, but the script is a shaggy third rate small town story centered around familial secrets that only begins to come alive in the final reel. Too little too late.

Very enjoyable small-town portrait from Altman and writer Anne Rapp (who collaborated the following year in the equally under-appreciated DR. T AND THE WOMEN). The fact that several of Altman's later works (such as this one) received little by way of praise says less about Altman's art than it does about the diminishing critical judgment of the audiences (whether casual cinema-goers or professional critics) viewing his work. My thirtieth Altman.

Another reminder to me why I don't dig Robert Altman that much anymore; another all-star cast in a completely shapeless and pointless movie

Altman directs this pleasing enough small town thriller with clever characters at a pace best described as slow. While this suits the picture, there's nothing here to capture the imagination, nor is there any emotion to make the show stand out.

A refreshing comedy with characters to care for. It's slow, but worth the trip.

Fabulous! The actors are all at the top of their game, and Charles Dutton is just phenomenal. All the varying and varied threads weave together in a supremely satisfying way; this movie has true heart and a deep, witty, wise soul. Great stuff!

Small town Southern America is the setting for this black comedy about an aging woman who's suicide is covered up by her greedy neice, and the town becomes the centre of a murder investigation. No, this isn't a full blown detective film but a leisurely character driven piece from Robert Altman. The ensemble cast is outstanding (even Chris O'Donnell does a fair job as a dopey rookie cop) but if you want fast moving, this isn't for you. Gentle, interesting but not Altman's best

YTS.
