The first thing that comes to my mind if anyone asked me about this movie was "meh". That should pretty much give you an idea of this movie.

I may be overrating this a tad, but it's partially out of recognition that this sort of B-grade action thriller - not trying to revolutionize anything or be a sweeping epic, but just keeping its foot on the pedal with a fast pace and violent action and twists from start to finish - has value in the cinematic landscape. I also appreciate the complete absence of CGi in the action scenes. The villains are on the weak side, but still, I had a decent time.

Better than it has any right to be. Entertaining, but forgettable. Wahlberg plays...a good guy who does incredibly illegal stuff. And Beckinsale gets seven shades of shit beaten out of her by the end of the film, poor woman - Ribisi is fun, but his voice is way too annoying. Ben Foster basically uses his character as an excuse to sleep with Beckinsale, which doesn't work out. Don't go out of your way to see it. Really, don't.

A pretty good movie which seemed to have been spread over slightly too many ideas/sub-plots. Enjoyable enough and one of Marky Mark's better performances.

Performances are cool, but not quite good enough to make you forget how generic the dialogue actually is. The writing in general isn't that good. Did not feel any tension whatsoever. Maybe because I didn't care about any of the boring characters. Or maybe because the plot is just dumb at times. I mean, that thing with the wife at the end is really fuckin' dumb. Maybe it's the direction, I don't know... :/

It's actually more absurd than entertaining, with plot twists that left me amazed and bothered. But what makes this even worse is the miserable camera work, that carelessly wants to put you inside the action with naive effects of zoom in and out -- Neill Blomkamp and even Michael Bay know how to use it for dramatic, thrilling results, but Kormákur fails big time.

Simmons is always entertaining, Foster and Ribisi are decent, but all are criminally underused. I guess Wahlberg shouting and furrowing his brow is supposed to compensate for the rest of my gripes, but it's really not his fault when he has a little ungrateful brat to drag around (yeah, I'm looking at you "Banshee").

Which moron edited this movie. Every time there is a dialogue, they cut away to another scene. Wtf, where is the rest of the conversation? And also, did they bother to do some research how ships, captains and crew actually work and operate? And no, a ship doesn't just stop like a car when you throw an anker in the water. God, how stupid. And don't get me started about all the stupid decisions all the characters make, it's too much to count. What a god awful mess.

The director treats you like an idiot by constantly throwing exposition in your face and trading nuance for explanation. Ben Foster was the best part and was tragically underused until I'd already checked out. Just watch the trailer add a few "fucks" into the dialogue while imagining the most predictable by the numbers plot to go around it, and you'll save yourself nearly two hours and a few bucks.

Ehhh... yeah okay. Nothing phenomenal, but a completely inoffensive viewing experience with solid actors and atmosphere. Everything about it gives it enough to get by without really striving to the next level. It's pretty predictable I guess, with an interesting conclusion, but with a couple of half-assed emotional sub-plots and characters that you don't ever reeeally have to get too invested in. They're just kinda there, and that's okay. I do like Kate Beckinsale though, damn she's sexy.

Contraband is an above-average heist film. It takes its time to get going, but once it does, there's no stopping it. The set-up works effectively, slowly building tension until it all gets released in the final 50 minutes. While the script needed fine-tuning, removing some unimportant plot points to help the pacing, this is an engaging film with effective performances.

Glorifying the contrabandist with cheap sentimentalist cliches, i.e. reminiscing about the good old days, assembling the dream team - what the actual fuck. We are talking about glorifying a criminal offence here. Where's Hollywood's morality code gone!? Oh, wait... If that wasn't enough, the film is badly constructed too - there is a noticeable series of ridiculous over the top rushed events at one stage, very poor and bizarre line delivery/accent from the villain. However, Kate Beckinsale

Utterly terrible. I only enjoyed myself when Marky Mark was punching things! The screenplay is moronic, the messy editing infuriating and the endless blue/grey scale is irritatingly bland! Not to mention the painfully predictable and ridiculously coincidental plotting and the fact that all characters are fucking idiots. There are also some epically stupid moments; including a captain who tries to stop a supertanker with the anchor and Kate Beckinsale as "The Woman Who Cannot Die". Retarded.

This started off being one of those movies that drive me crazy where nothing goes right for the characters. It was a little too intense for me. Once it got closer to the end though I grew to appreciate this film. Wahlberg and Beckinsale do a fine job but the best people in this were J.K. Simmons, Giovanni Ribisi and Ben Foster. There is no doubt that this movie should be called a thriller. My heart is still pounding after it's over. I also really enjoyed the music in this. Not too bad at all.

Suspenseful and interesting, but unfortunately it stretches the bounds of credibility beyond the breaking point. The story is gritty and dirty, but too extreme. I can't fault the acting, but I take issue with the plot and script. Mark Wahlberg and Kate Beckinsale were great. The ending was far too tidy and unconvincing.

Some appealing elements--like much of the cast, but it's a mess of over-plotting that leaves the cast running to hit its marks, with no time to be actual characters. Plot twist after plot twist, and every one of them felt predictable.

Unfortunately I felt like I knew exactly what was coming in every scene. The screenplay did not add any clever twists and somehow managed to incorporate all the cliches of writing. That is the biggest downfall of Contraband, two major scenes could have been different and it would have been a whole new film. It was saved by the acting from the wonderful cast. Ribisi and Foster in particular saved this film for being a boring drag of a film. Decent effort, could have used more development.

By my scale this is a 'very good' so maybe I'm rating it too high, like Ytadel, but I agree with his/her review. Honestly; this is a fun little, unoriginal, but well acted movie. It does nothing you haven't seen a million times, but most of it is thrilling. It builds some tension, and even though I felt like the whole thing with the wife at the end was kind of wonky, I had a good time. If a movie entertains it gets a recommendation from me, and Contraband does.

Good movie with a really slow start. It was hard at the beginning to really care for any of the characters because everybody just said the F word every other word. Very poor script writing. About half-way through the action and story got going and it will leave you on the edge of your seat.

Director Baltasar Kormakur brings a harsh lens over the typical crime thriller narrative. While the cast is magnificently pieced together, too much time is given to Mark Wahlberg's silent hero antics and not enough to the many well conceived villains and supporting pieces. In spite of a derailing third act twist involving Marky Mark's main squeeze, Contraband manages to remain gripping and exciting through most of its two hours.

Tho overall good performances, the first acts drags on far too long , i nearly fell asleep in the cinema! Second act picks up, third was decent. Standard, predictable story, basic scripting, average directing. I honestly expected a bit more from Contraband! K Becks was probably the most entertaining bit of the movie. Which doesn't say a lot.

A bit disappointing. Solid cast, but it falls in the pitfall of having its characters get in way too deep shit and somehow coming out of it with far too few bruises, and overall having a pretty done-before narrative. So many different, more interesting angles to approach this from. Maybe it's my fault for expecting something more hard-ass like Taken.

This is a blatant remake of GONE IN 60 SECONDS without any hot cars or hot babes. Combine that with it's horrible almost documentary style camera work and bad lighting, and the whole time you're watching this film you'll just be asking yourself: "Why aren't I watching GONE IN 60 SECONDS?"

Decent film that is turns out to be highly watchable. There are plenty of things to pick at, but not enough to ruin it. I'd venture to say its worth your time if nothing better presents itself. My only real complaint is how moral the protagonist needs to be laid out so the audience can accept the illegal shit he's doing. I think more writers need to take a page from the likes of Goodfellas and let protagonists sometimes just be bad guys who are also likable. No need for the higher moral cause.

Even if the plot wasn't a variation on Gone in 60 Seconds, or if it wasn't handled without any tact, I'm not sure it would elevate itself beyond a simplistic heist film. The performances are utilitarian, the action is entertaining enough, and the plot has enough twists to make the experience somewhat enjoyable, but overall there's really no compelling reason to watch it more than once.
